“ S H A D O W S ”

A long time ago, one of Keiran’s ancestors attempted to fool death and bring back a dragon from the dead, but, unknowingly, his failure had attracted the attention of something dangerous, vile. His bloodline was cursed and the small village they occupied was sealed off from the rest of Sornieth. The dragon responsible? turned into a mass of sentient shadows some called The Creature.

Each year, it devoured four hatchling sacrifices, seeking to feed off of their untrained magic, and thus, The Creature was kept under control. With each death, it became more powerful, bloodthirsty and savage.

Before his hatching, the rest of his family; parents, uncles and aunts, grandparents and everyone still alive to suffer the consequences of their ancestor’s actions grew tired, powerless before their youngs’ possible deaths and filled with grief for all those gone thanks to this curse. They decided that enough was enough and that it was time to confront The Creature head-on even if it meant to die trying.

Keiran’s egg was the last one the family produced, the only one in his clutch.

The family hid him in an old house of theirs with food and several scrolls that would be able to tell their story, and they sealed the place with powerful light magic. The Creature could never be able to find him.

Keiran hatched alone and confused, surrounded by nothing but an empty home. With time, he grew stronger and wiser, reading everything the house library provided and training to enhance his magic. With the seal broken, he was able to see the village the books described; obscure skies, worn out houses whose shining glory had disappeared long ago, and a lonely village bound to be forgotten. Despite that, one thing was quite different from the descriptions; the village, said to be surrounded by sentient shadow creatures (if they were even able to be called as such) that whispered promises of devastation and destruction, with a forest nobody was brave enough to travel through, was instead surrounded by a forest that was almost drowned in a thick, dark, mist.

Now, anyone would think this is normal mist, that his family had succeeded, that he was free.

Keiran knew better.

The shadows looked alive, but slow; asleep. The words they once whispered had turned into light breaths.

The Creature was hibernating, his family, attempting to end it’s life, died in battle, granting it more power than ever and sending it into a profound state of unconsciousness it would be freed from once it was hungry once more.

There was no time and he fled the village with his belongings as soon as he realized what was going on, dedicating his following years to try and find a way to end his family’s torment once and for all.

____It was an extremely obscure night, when they met.

Her white scales reflected the moonlight that fell upon the trees of the forest. Keiran might as well have been considered hypnotized by how long it took for him to react. When her eyes, empty and hollow, met his in that clearing, Keiran knew that he was goner.

Two cursed souls bound by a friendship turned love searched for answers to their troubles, scared for what the future may hold.

Then, they found it.

A lake, blessed by the magic of the Tidelord, could be the solution to breaking their curses.

The water shimmered with magical energy and when Althea submerged in it, she opened her eyes to find herself inside of her own consciousness.

A breakthrough, it was called. The water tested whoever came in contact with it to see if they’re worthy of breaking the established magical barriers for all dragons.

That night, the lake cleansed them both of the destructive magic imbued in their blood.

_“ T H E L A K E ” II_

____Golden veins appeared on their bodies and they could feel, as well as use, magic to a greater level. It flowed through them in a way that was as natural as life itself and it flowed in the world around them like a gentle breeze.

Their new magic allowed things many thought impossible for a long time, breaking a curse (or even casting one) was something that, with training and research, they were able to do easily.

As time passed, they became known in Sornieth for their extensive knowledge of magic and their powers, helping many dragons who, otherwise, would’ve suffered similar fates to their families.

____If someone had been present the day their offspring hatched, right under the light of the sun, they would’ve seen their shocked faces when they noticed their same golden veins on their bodies.

At that moment, they both knew that their labor was far from over.

As tears flowed down their faces and they welcomed the new hatchlings into the world, holding them as close as they’d held each other for the first time after being cleansed from their curses, they hoped that their children would continue to help dragons across Sornieth the same way they had for many generations to come.
