Kichiro hails from a small remote village, has a younger sister, aging population, so most of the able-bodied youngins struck out. Kichiro was the last to leave since many left without finding ways to take care of their village roles, so he stuck around to serve the elders and children, including his sister.
People of this village have animal guiding spirits, Kichiro's is actually a rabbit, while his sister's is a vixen, called Miko. He decided to hide the fact that his wasn't a fox (foxes and wolves can compete to become village leader) since he was ashamed of having a familiar as tame as a rabbit. His rabbit is actually super moody and cold, while his sister's vixen is playful, friendly, and curious, just like his sister. Kichiro's rabbit only gets along with Miko.
One day, the village burns down during their annual festival. Kichiro was there when it happened, and although he was able to save a few elders, all the children, including his sister, were trapped in the community huts. The boy was not able to save any of them (haha lol super cliched also alskdjf tragic backstory time. if you assumed I'd do anything else not tragic, you don't know me well enough pfff). He has his priorities so he relocated the elders in a nearby village as soon as possible, but there wasn't a moment where he wasn't grieving. He wandered around the ashes of his once happy and safe village, pretty much refusing to do anything. He refused to disturb the ashes where the children and his sister fell, nor any of the burnt and ruined abodes of his fellow villagers. He camped in the middle of everything, blaming himself for not being more efficient and competent, and persuaded his rabbit familiar to leave him since he was undeserving. He moped around alone, refusing to move on, until Miko appeared. She was dancing along the perimeters of what used to be the community hut, completely carefree. At first, Kichiro was mad. He believed that, not only had the gods abandoned him and his village all those nights ago on that festival night (which was supposed to be in remembrance of em oof) and now, they are laughing in his face with Miko, as if they have moved on. As if this was just a trivial matter in their eyes. But Miko, as if holding on to the memories of his sister, refused to budge at Kichiro's scorn and annoyance. It was half a year later when the boy realized Miko was trying to convey something else.
This is getting too long so uh I'll expand on it later but basically Kichiro bonds with Miko, and the land accepts him as the leader, and with his new position, he lets go of the past, blessing all those who have fallen, picks up what he has left, and strikes out. (this happens after he camps there stubbornly for 4 years)
The next (secondary) arc, (yes, the above was just a prologue, and this below ain't even the main arc *****), Kichiro wanders the mountains beyond his village, finds a local 仙人 (immortal? I can't find a good translation ew) who, because of some ill karma, is dying or smth, and she passes her responsibilities over to him on her death bed, making him the guardian of this mountain range, and also effectively chaining/sealing/bounding him to the same predicament she was under, meaning he cannot step foot out of this said range. He doesn't mind, at first. This exchange made him immortal essentially, and over a few hundred years of his mental maturity, he was able to gain powers to protect the land. Ironically, it's fire lol (will expand more here on how he obtained it).
Cue a few more thousand years later, he has lived comfortably, and had no reason to know of the doings of the world outside his domain, then, main arc! Love interest who at first was a child who visited the forest outskirts often, but as she grew up, he started falling in love, then HAHAHHAH SIKE YOU THOUGHT she moves away/has a need to move away, probably some familial reasons, but also, this is probably modern times now, which is cool, so Kichiro boy will have a good cultural shock later, and this gives me an excuse to draw modern!Kichiro LOL etc etc... I haven't developed this far at all...
