When returning from a hunt, TamamonoMae was met with the horrid sight of his beloved dead. Killed by a dragon no less. TamamonoMae swore there and then he'd find the dragon that had stolen his beloved from him and take their life in return. A life for a life, it was only fair. TamamonoMae searched all across Sornieth, yet he could never pick back up the unforgettable scent of blood, death and decay.

As time passed, TamamonoMae grew weak and was slowly dying. His focus only on avenging his beloved and not on taking care of himself. Then, just as TamamonoMae thought he'd die without gaining his revenge, an Imperial Dragon stumbled upon his dying form. TamamonoMae pushed himself to stand, yet it was clear he could not fight.

The Imperial stared TamamonoMae down before it let out a deep chuckle. "You fight so hard to live." The Imperial said. "The spirit willing, but the flesh isn't. I know this well. Just like you, I am dying, yet I do not have the fire that burns without end like yours. Soon I will pass on. If you truly wish to to live on, consume my body after I pass and you will have the strength you seek. For my body is less flesh and bone and more... Magic so to speak." The Imperial said smirking.

TamamonoMae was baffled. He didn't know what to think. Soon, the Imp moved to lay down and curled up just a few feet away from him. TamamonoMae watched as the Imp closed his eyes and drifted to sleep. Slowly, TamamonoMae laid back down, watching the Imp as it slept. TamamonoMae fought to stay awake, but soon his exhaustion became too much and TamamonoMae could no longer keep his eyes open. When next he woke, TamamonoMae was greeted with the sight of the Imperial. It wasn't just some dream. TamamonoMae pushed himself to stand and moved closer to the Imp. Discovering that the Imp had already passed on.

TamamonoMae sat in contemplation, unsure of if this was the path he should take... Eventually the desire for revenge won out and TamamonoMae consumed the dragon as he was told to do. Pain soon wracked TamamonoMae's body, yet as much as he wanted to cry out in agony, nothing escaped him. Unable to withstand it, TamamonoMae quickly fell unconscious. When TamamonoMae woke once more, he found night had fallen. As he moved to stand, something was... off. His body felt heavier. His movements less refined and coordinated. Once more of his senses had returned, TamamonoMae looked himself over. Shock took hold as he found himself with scales, wings, everything that made up a dragon. He was now a dragon... No longer was he dying. No longer was he weak. He was given the strength to live on. He was given the strength to achieve his revenge.

The shadowlands stretched onwards.

He had become used to traversing the land for long lengths of time before seeing any sign of civilization, but the shadowlands were different. Small outposts and lairs were either few and far between, or so well hidden he couldn’t even smell their scents. Though, that probably had to do with how the shadowlands were in general. The way it smelled, looked, even felt. They felt different in how they clung to his scales, making his skin itch and wish to transform into his familiar fox body. Tama knew better though, that an imposing imperial dragon form was far less to attract those wishing to do harm than that of a fox. So he took to his gifted form, given to him in a time of need from another who no longer had use of it and the magic it imbued.

“When… will I find them?” a voice, soft and disarming spoke. TamamonoMae slowed, his ears perked as he listened for the voice again though he did not have to wait long. “Pain, anger, a need. Deep and driving, there is loss in its core… you are tired.”

Tama came to a full stop at those words, and settled onto another dragon in his path. He was certain that the pearlcatcher had not been there before, and yet his eyes told him otherwise.

“Hello,” the pearlcatcher spoke, his purple eyes that had been closed only a moment opening and staring up at Tama. “I am Cole.”

TamamonoMae did not respond at first, still puzzled over the dragon’s sudden appearance and words. How could he know such things when Tama had not uttered a single syllable in what felt like days?

“I know things,” Cole replied, answering the thought. “Not… thoughts, no. Feelings. I hear them.” Tama noted the gentle tones of the dragon’s voice, how comforting they were even in this land. The itch in Tama’s scales had subsided slightly, enough that Tama was willing to finally speak.

“How do you hear feelings, Cole?” Tama asked. The other dragon pondered the question for a moment, then finally spoke.

“I don’t know, but I can.” Tama readied himself to turn away from the pearlcatcher, to continue on his arduous trek to wherever he was brought next, when he watched a small hare emerge from its burrow and hop toward Cole.

Being a fox meant that Tama was used to the sight of prey animals, but always as they ran from him or as he caught them in their last moments, surprised and unaware of what befell them. Now, he watched the hare approach the pearlcatcher, unafraid and curious. There was no caution in the hare’s actions. Cole reclined on his hind legs, his pearl tucked neatly under one of his back claws as he cupped the hare with his front and brought it to his chest. Cole stroked the hare’s back and its eyes closed under the gentle touches.

“She is happy,” he hummed. “Comforted in a land of shadow that twists and swirls and confuses.” Cole stopped in the pets and lowered the hare back to the ground, where it hopped from his claws before turning back to regard the gentle dragon just as it entered back into its burrow.

“My clan…” Cole spoke again, turning his head to gaze into a direction that only he knew. “You could rest there, if only for a little while. It is a good place to rest.” Despite Tama not knowing this dragon or these lands, there was something in the way Cole spoke that made him realize he could trust the pearlcatcher. It made Tama nervous to realize he felt this way, but he couldn’t argue with the fact that he was indeed tired.

“Alright,” he finally said. “For a little while at least.” that was more for him than for Cole, who regarded him with shaded eyes for a moment before he nodded and turned, leading Tama to his clan.

They traveled for hours. TamamonoMae’s guard was up, his imposing figure as an imperial enough to keep them safe. Though, maybe it wasn’t because of his stature, but the aura that Cole seemed to give out. Many times Tama had watched a bird perch on the brim of Cole’s hat or some other animal run over to him, and the pearlcatcher would seemingly respond to it as if in polite conversation.

Cole’s clan greeted them when they arrived, the lair itself being surprisingly welcoming for a shadow clan. Then again, Tama had so little experience in these lands that he wasn’t sure what to expect, and only the small outposts he had stumbled upon here and there offered any reprieve from the aching lands. The clan felt like the way Cole’s aura had felt, only everywhere. Perhaps it was their leader Shale that made it feel like that, or Cole’s… magic? Had worn itself into the walls and the ground.

“It is calm here…” Cole spoke as Tama settled into the space he was afforded by the leader to call his own, at least while he resided here. Tama sat and turned to the pearlcatcher, who had accompanied him. “You are different, you know. Dragon, but not really.” His words gave Tama pause. None had ever been able to tell what he was, not unless they saw him shift from his current form into his true one. His fox form was a carefully guarded part of him, and few were allowed to know.

“I will not tell,” Cole murmured, bowing his head. “You are safe, I promise I will not tell.” The sincerity in his voice made the tension that had built in Tama’s shoulders relax. He nodded, grateful. Cole smiled, sweet and innocent, then left Tama to rest.

“Only for a day, maybe two.” he muttered to himself, eyelids growing heavy as he gazed out into the clan proper. He had spotted a tea shop on the way in, and thought to himself that he would enjoy a cup tomorrow. Then maybe it would be time to leave. “Only a day, my love. Then I continue on my path.” His heart ached, fueled by the agony he had carefully held onto for so long. But here it felt slightly duller, comforted by the aura of the clan, and of Cole. A day, he reminded himself.

Except a day turned into several, that turned into weeks. Soon it became months, and while the fire in his belly at the thought of finally catching the one responsible for his lover’s death still burned hotly, it had also been easier to quell while he remained in the clan. On the days it was particularly hard, he would be adamant that tomorrow he would leave. And then he would sit with Cole, who knew him better than almost himself, and he would think. ”Maybe a little while longer.”
