If you think that the rumor about all dragons developing a strange obsession isn’t true, then clearly you haven’t met Apollo. Though some dragons would settle for hoarding treasure, or gems, or even rich ores from the earth, Apollo has another aspiration.

She is going to collect all the birds in the world.

Now, I’m worried that what you just heard was “she is out to collect a lot of birds.” This is not the case.

She is going to collect all the birds in the world.

The obsession began when the Nocturne discovered that with her abilities of mimicry, she could copy any birdcall she had ever heard. And that by copying them, she was able to call birds to her. They fascinated her as a child, and her interest soon blossomed into what it is today. She learned their language, or at least she has a few guesses at what she’s saying to them, and she considers them her friends. She feels happiest when she is with the birds, and, speaking honestly, she does not want to share them.

So the solution is simple. She just has to have all of them.

It won’t take that long, right?

"If you’re a bird, I’m a bird."

Apollo was raised by birds. Or rather, a bird.
A Red-Footed Akirbeak discovered her egg and, as any Akirbeak would do, took her in. The egg hatched within a few days of the bird's discovery of it.
The creature within was peculiar. It didn't have feathers. It had hard scales that glinted in the warm fires of the Emberglow Hearth. Its eyes weren't round like a birds'; they were sharp and had ever-so-slightly narrowed pupils. Most importantly, it didn't have a beak. How would it survive without being able to crack open nuts? Without being able to break the carapace of crabs? The Akirbeak decided that the creature was hopelessly helpless, so she decided to try to teach it how to live.
The going was rough. The creature didn't pay much attention to her. Though it was great at repeating what she said to it. It would chirrup mating calls and warning cries back at her perfectly. It was improving, the Akirbeak decided.
The little creature hit a point where it just grew and grew and grew. The young one's enlargement seemed endless. The scaly thing hunted nonstop during its growth, only offering a few morsels to its mother every now and then. Soon, it dwarfed her by at least four times. But, she had taught it well; it never showed any hostility towards her.
The creature, however, began to loathe its time with her. It felt like it needed to leave and explore. The Akirbeak fought against her little creature at first, but then decided that letting it go would make it happy. And all she ever wanted was for it to be happy and live.
So, she allowed for it to leave. She was as sad as much as a bird can be sad... at least, until she found another egg.
Apollo remembers her early childhood distinctly, but all points between then and her full-fledged adulthood are a blur. She remembers being picked up by a female dragon that actually looked a lot like an Akirbeak. The dragon, after discovering that the little Nocturne she found only knew bird-calls, began to teach her the main language of Sornieth, draconic. With time, Apollo learned how to communicate with dragons, though her communication with birds will probably be better for the duration of her life.
Although Apollo has no actual magical inclination, when she heard that a place called the Academy of Magic was hiring dragons to be teachers, she leaped at the chance. Her passion lay in collecting all birds, and this would help her provide income to fuel her dreams.
To her surprise, the clan who backed the Academy gave her an interview with the head. She presented her talents, which were limited to all things birds.
Do you have any special communication abilities? Can you speak Fae? Coatl? I can speak bird.
Do you have any magical abilities? I can talk to birds.
Can you do anything... at all? ...I know how to listen. To birds.
With the way her interview went, it was a huge surprise that she actually got a job. She left the dragon who took her in with a kiss on the cheek and moved to Honoo's clan, where she would live as long as she held her position...

...as the Communications Teacher.

Most dragons are hooked on the fact that Apollo can accurately talk to birds, and don't bother to look beyond that. And yes, while it's incredible, amazing, revolutionary that she can talk to birds, she'd argue that what's more incredible, amazing, and revolutionary than that is her uncanny luck at poker.
Apollo, while appearing to be an obedient, quiet, innocent dragon, has a strangely enhanced sense of wry humor. Sarcasm is her forte. Most dragons have a picture of her being a quiet, old, and slightly-off-her-rocker bird-loving lady, but, when met with her dry jokes, their image of her is shattered in their minds. One of Apollo's favorite things to do is watch their faces of shock as she makes a comment about how cold the weather has been lately (nearly dropped to below boiling yesterday!) or about how the gardens are doing well. If only there were gardens to be doing well.
Because the creature that hatched and raised her was an Akirbeak, Apollo has been searching for one to be her companion for some time now. It seems to be a herculean task, but Apollo is determined to track down where all her plundered eggs (better known as snacks) have been disappearing to.
To the newbies of the Academy of Magic, Apollo does not exist. Sure, they've heard about the communications dragon who speaks bird better than she speaks draconic, but what dragon in their right mind would believe that?
Knock, Knock!

A dragon stood at her chamber door. He was a young Fae, his nervous eyes flickering around the room lit up by torches. Apollo smiled at him, knowing that the dragons of the Academy had pulled another trick on a newbie. It wasn't as if she encouraged such behavior or anything... well, most of the time she didn't.
"Who sent you up here?" She asked gently.
"Oh, u-um, the students said that I had to come meet Apollo, that she'd prepare me for the school... uh, I take it that you are Apollo?"
"Yes, I am Apollo! Glad you noticed! I wonder why they sent you up to me, though..."
"Me too. W-what do you do around here?"
Apollo pulled her face into a fake mask of shock. "What? You mean you've never heard of me?"
"N-no!" The Fae squeaked.
"Search deep! I know it's in there!" After a moment of silence, Apollo gave a theatrical sigh. "Fine... but I know you've heard of me. I'm Apollo, the bird-talking Communications Teacher!" She gave a perfectly mimicked chirp, and, suddenly, all kinds of bird twitters and calls and shrieks filled the room.
With that, the dragon's eyes widened and he bolted, the sounds of amused cackling and wild tweeting following him down the winding corridors of the Academy of Magic.
