Known to much of the world by aliases, and learnt about through rumours, Hellfire is a powerful figure — dangerously so, for a dragon of his particular disposition. Since even before he had hatched, he had always been unique. Special.. a blessing to the world.
A grieving mother from a small clan belonging to the Fire Flight had found his egg, nestled amongst the dark crags and lava-veined expanses of the Molten Scar — alone, seemingly abandoned by his previous caregivers. Why he had been left wasn’t clear, for his egg showed no sign of damage or trauma, but the guardian felt she knew one thing for certain. This was no coincidence. Finding this egg, so soon after losing her own hatchlings to misfortune, and in such a dangerous, inhospitable environment, must’ve surely been a gift from the divines. She brought the egg back to the lair, carried ever so gently between her talons, and watched over it day and night, awaiting for the little life inside to emerge.
When he finally did, his adoptive mother hadn’t been the only one to cry words of joy and astonishment. A beautiful, healthy hatchling poked his head out from the shell, with a glimmering hide the colour of embers and eyes that glowed with the intensity of a pyre.. with strange, unnatural marks that shone from his flanks and around his eyes, pulsing softly in tandem with his heartbeat, forming symbols of fire; smoke and flame had wreathed his body from the moment he had escaped his egg, emanating from his scales and wreathing his limbs, winding around his talons and flowing down his tail. All of these things, each as unusual and as fascinating as the last, were practically nothing in comparison to one of his most prominent features; as he opened his eyes and took his first look at the world around him, the very air itself seemed to ignite, forming a glorious, blazing halo, an eternally burning ring that silhouetted his head in flames.
Even after his hatching and naming, that awe never quite faded; after all, why should it? This young soul was clearly important! It was well known that extremely prominent depictions of a dragon’s inborn element in their traits could be a sign of near-demigodly power, and all together like this, paired with those markings.. it was hard to try to deny that he seemed destined for greatness. The other carers in the nursery doted on him almost as much as his own mother, showering him with affection and praise as he grew.
