When a storm thunders overhead, or dust clouds begin to form on the horizon, most dragons tuck away into their lairs to weather the events to come. But those who linger outside a little longer will be treated to a most unusual sight: dragons dancing amongst the rumbling thunderheads, or racing alongside the leading edge of a dust storm. Spotted only alongside the same clouds which decorate their scales, these dragons have become known as Painted Clouds.

The truth of their origin is yet unknown—and asking a Painted Cloud directly is a daunting task. Not only do they tend to reside in clouds where most dragons dare not fly, but they are also as transient as a storm, blowing in without warning and disappearing as soon as the sun breaks through the clouds. Their mystery has led to many dragons coming up with their own theories, whispered amongst clans or squabbled over in taverns. Some believe them to have been shaped from the clouds themselves, their markings a sign of their heritage. Others say that the Windsinger created these dragons and painted the clouds upon their scales himself, granting them the ability to, in turn, paint the skies with that which decorates them. And yet others think that these dragons were granted a sacred duty to shepherd and guide their clouds all across Sornieth.

Whatever the truth, one thing is certain: to spot one of the elusive Painted Clouds is a rare treat indeed.

Perhaps the most frequently-spotted variant of Painted Clouds is that which calls the Twisting Crescendo home—largely because the vortex almost never stops, and the clouds never fade. Painted Crescendos are uniquely gifted, even amongst Wind dragons, with the ability to brave the deepest parts of the Twisting Crescendo with ease. These playful dragons can be spotted darting in and out of the vortex, occasionally launching up toward the Cloudsong with the momentum granted by the storm’s winds, but rarely flying close enough—or staying long enough—to chat.

Actually seeing a Painted Crescendo might be difficult—their coloration lends itself well to hiding within the swirling vortex for which they were named—but they are not unfriendly dragons. The few who have gotten the opportunity have discovered that the storm’s residents are actually quite welcoming and cheerful. They are, however, daredevils to a fault, and enjoy nothing more than racing along the winds of their home clouds in an attempt to best each other in some challenge or another.

Due to their fast-paced lifestyle, they do not tend to make dens—at least, not any that have been found. In fact, there have been a few sightings of Painted Crescendos daisy-chaining together in the storm, a small handful guiding their flight while a group of their fellows, latched on to legs, tails, and necks, take their rest. Their turbulent home also makes for few opportunities for hobbies aside from risk-taking, though they are fond of telling stories (especially about their exploits). When it comes to attire, their tastes are somewhat similar to other Painted Clouds: lightweight apparel that does not impede flight or the movement of wind. Painted Crescendos take it a step further, preferring materials that are either extra flowy or sturdier and less likely to be torn in the gale, usually in shades of greens, reds, and oranges. It is also not uncommon to find them wearing protective gear of some sort, as the depths of the Twisting Crescendo is extremely dangerous even to the most prepared.
