Biography
Named for the daughter of Oedipus. In the eponymous play by Sophocles, she goes against the orders of the king of Thebes and gives her brother (a rebel) proper burial rites. The angry king (Creon) ordered her to be locked up in a tomb to starve to death; rather than wait for a slow end, she hanged herself. The king's son, who was in love with Antigone, also kills himself when he learns she is dead, and the queen kills herself when she learns of her son's death. Thus divine judgment is visited on the house of Creon for his actions.
