The sun rises outside a cave, painting the twinkling night sky a pale cerulean. The evergreen trees that encircle the grove block most of the sunlight out, leaving a pale glow to illuminate the terrain. A cave entrance is brought to light in the pale morning glow. Voices can be heard from within, reduced to soft whispers through a seemingly impenetrable door.

“It’s time to wake up. The day is filled with many important assignments! You’ve got a meeting at noon, the clan territory has to be scouted, then another meeting at dusk, and after that you must…” The voice is filled with enthusiasm, but is smooth and refined, reminding one of liquid gold.The disembodied voice continues to list off miscellaneous tasks, before an eerie silence fills the air. Light footfalls echo throughout the cavern, bouncing off the stone tunnels that lie within. The voice resumes once again, the silence quenched by the melodic voice.

“Good morning! Today you have several duties to fulfill. You are meeting with Athena just before noon, gathering supplies after, and must attend a meeting at dusk. Oh, and you can’t forget that there are several deliveries to make.” The voice seems to be rousing unseen entities in the cave.
“Greetings! Today you have multiple tasks to complete. There is a meeting this morning, the food stores need to be replenished, a meeting at noon, Skadi wants to speak to you after the meeting, and Athena requests your presence whenever you have a free moment.” Footfalls grow louder, seeming to grow closer. The sound of stone grinding against stone fills the air as the door opens to reveal a vibrant nocturne.

The pale sunlight gleams off her mulberry tinted wings. She inhales the crisp morning air, taking a moment to take in her surroundings. Dew drops delicately adorn the blades of grass beneath her claws, resembling the night sky that had faded away not too long ago. She stretches her wings, feeling the gentle breeze that rustles through the trees. She makes her way back to the cave, returning to her duty. The stone door grinds to a close, quelching the faint light that slipped through the doorway. The nocturne’s voice rings out again, waking more of those who live within the cave. Creatures of all sorts begin to awaken inside the cave, the cavern seemingly coming to life. Gods and goddesses of every type reside within the tunnels in the cavern, creatures of dark and light alike.

If one were to venture into the cave, they would come upon the nocturne from before waking the gods and goddesses that inhabit the caves. Her name is Amaterasu, goddess of the sun. Every morning she rises with the sun, always the first awake in the clan. She tasks herself with making sure every clan member is awake and aware of their duties for the day. Amaterasu ensures that she does the job with care, politely rousing her fellow gods. She gently wakes them and lists off the assignments, making sure she doesn’t miss a single thing. Each night, she’ll put together a list of every single task that must be completed the following day. On certain occasions that require the entire clan to complete a task, she will gather everyone and recite the entire list, ensuring that everyone is aware of what the clan is doing. Even if there are no tasks that are required of her clan mates, she still wakes them up with the same courteousness. If she wasn’t there to wake the gods and goddesses up, the clan would be a mess. They rely on her to tell them their tasks and duties of the day.
Even though she has a lengthy task, she’s never uptight. Amaterasu is always easy-going, not wanting to inflict stress on others. Perhaps that’s why no one has complained about her waking them up. She prefers to go with the flow rather than going out of her way to change the dynamic of the clan. Amaterasu gets along with most dragons in the clan, making her job much easier. Not a single entity in the clan has ever seen her lose her temper or act with harm in mind. Because of this, she’s never gotten in to a fight. In the event of an argument, Amaterasu would most likely assume the role of peacemaker, but the chances of her getting into an argument are slim. She’s not necessarily introverted, but she is calm and collected at all times. In addition to her laid-back demeanor, Amaterasu is friendly towards everyone, even strangers. It makes her extremely easy to get along with. She seemingly has some kind of connection with everyone she meets, making frequent additions to her plentiful list of friends. If Amaterasu ever needed help, many of her friends would willing step forward to assist her in whatever way necessary.

Despite the fact that she’s an early riser, Amaterasu is constantly filled with energy. Even during the latest nights, she’s wide awake. It seems almost impossible that she’s so calm, yet full of energy. She manages her plentiful energy well; rather than just using it all at once, she stays collected and uses it over time. Once in a while, she’ll be out of energy, but a short time under the miniscule amount of sunlight that makes its way into the Tangled Wood is enough to recharge her. Amaterasu has made it a habit to take a few moments to herself under the early sunlight every morning. It rejuvenates her, renewing her energy before she even runs out of it.

When she’s not on her early morning duty, she fills her free time with a few hobbies. Amaterasu collects trinkets that the clan discards. She treasures gems, jewelry, and nearly everything shiny. She already has quite the collection, but she’ll never turn down a chance to expand her hoard. In addition to shiny objects, she collects ink and brushes, organizing each in neat rows. Painting takes up most of her spare time. She frequently contributes her ink wash paintings to the clan’s collection of art. Nature and sunlight are her main inspirations, but she will paint whatever comes to her. Amaterasu enjoys spending time with her mate, Nominosukune, as well. Their laughter can be heard from all around the cave when they’re together.

It’s strange, a sun goddess in the Tangled Wood. No one knows for sure where she came from, but the whispers of rumors float through the cavern. Some say she is the physical form of the sun, created from pure sunlight. Others say that she was born under the brightest sun. Regardless of the rumors, she doesn’t talk about her past much. No one ever really asks, though. They trust Athena’s judgement and respect that she welcomed Amaterasu into the clan. Mystery shrouds her past, but on a few rare occasions, she has revealed small details of her life before she came to the Ethereals. She has said the Mirrorlight Promenade was her previous home, but has never revealed why she left.

My talons clicked on the cold stone as I returned from my morning duty. All of the gods and goddesses had been woken up and notified of their tasks. Another successful morning, I thought, proud of my diligence. Though it’s not like I’ve had an unsuccessful morning. I arrived at my room in the cavern, excited to start my new project. I’d had the idea weeks ago, but I was out of ink at the time, so I’d had to wait.

I dipped my brush into the small pot of ink lying on the stone beside me, my claw tips stained with the dark substance. Jet black pigment trailed behind my brush, forming curves and squiggles. Curves and squiggles formed a tree, trees forming a forest. Hours passed, ink spreading like a wildfire across the page. Before I knew it, my painting was complete, the thin paper soaked with an inky forest illuminated by a single glowing sun.

I stood up, my bones aching from sitting for so long. I stretched my wings, or as much as I could within the stone chamber. I gently lifted the paper up and moved it to the table that sat across the room, making sure that the ink wouldn’t run. I’d ruined several paintings when trying to move them, so I’ve learned to be more careful.

I cleaned my brush and set it beside the others, pleased by the neat rows. I turned towards the door and made my way to the cave entrance. Once I was outside, I looked up at the sky, taking in it’s beauty. The sun was setting, casting an orange glow over the forest. The orangey-gold faded to red, red fading to purple. Finally, the sun disappeared below the trees, the last light dwindling. I turned away, returning to the cave.
