The color of the sun seen through clouds of volcanic ash stained the sand a rich burnt-orange that any painter would scramble to include in their palette. Bleached of value by the relentless sun, the stark dunes went from blinding to a soft white as the first stars breached the night sky.

His long, dark body lacked the grace of the desert sidewinder that crossed his path. It stared unblinkingly at him for a second that stretched on far longer than any second ever should regardless of circumstances. He blinked, dipping his head at it. The next he saw of it, the snake was slithering across a dune far across the empty desert.

The moon rested just above his snout. Time was difficult to grasp; he remembered moving, one unsteady step after the other, limping across the shifting sands. It was hard to know when he had moved too slowly or the dunes had changed underfoot faster than his tired muscles could accommodate for. One way or another his body had given up, and now here he was, bleeding out with only the stars to bear witness and the moon unable to watch him fade away.

He laid his head on the soft, cool sand, watching as the stars finished their infinite routines. The wound on his flank itched and he huffed, sending tiny grains of sand racing over the top and down the other side of the dune. A faint blue glow spread its light on the sand around him and he looked at himself. Bands of light were forming around his horns, his neck, his limbs...even his tail. Runes ringed by the same light seemed the basis for the bands. As he watched, his body knitted itself back together as if he had never been injured.
