Biography
Sapphire woke to a golden dawn. It had been months since she had woken to the darkness, trapped in a cave with no light and no memories. Despite the passing of time, she still felt a sticky, oozing fear that threatened to drown her mind whenever she spent too long in a dark, enclosed space. Most nights she slept outside, where the light of the stars and moon would comfort her, and where she would wake to light, not dark.
Her mate Corundum would sleep beside her, insisting on keeping her company despite the bitter winds that scorched the clifftops. He had been the one comfort to her in the caverns, the one constant thing in her life. The only thing, other than her name, that she could remember.
They had been found by Hemlock, a spiral explorer, on his way back to his home. He had invited them to his clan, and the offer of food and a place to rest, even from a stranger, was too tantalising, to resist. Since then, life had been a dream.
The clan was kind and welcoming, the surrounds were beautiful, and with Corundum beside her, Sapphire was happy. Well, happy but for one thing that bugged her constantly, day and night.
She did not know who she was, where she came from, or why she had ended up in the caves. And this terrified her.
Perhaps someone had been protecting them by wiping their memories. Maybe they had witnessed something horrible, and had been so traumatised that the only option had been to start a new life without those memories. Perhaps they had known too much about a crime, and their minds had been erased so that they could not tell.
Hemlock had tried to help, using fancy machines in an attempt to revive some memory from the back of their minds. But it was no use; the memories were gone.
On that glorious day, however, the sky seemed brighter as she sat beside Corundum and watched the ships sail in the distant milky bays.
"You know," she said softly as she lowered her head to rest upon the coatl's shoulder, "I don't think we need our old memories. Here we can make new ones, better ones. As long as I'm with you, all the memories I need will be right beside me."
