Not all failed warriors die.

The shadow sickness is an insidious thing - hard to notice until it has ravaged the person beyond repair. It cannot be cured, only halted, the effects that have already taken place unable to be removed from their host.

There is a place the warriors are kept, if the sickness is caught before it changes them utterly. It is deep within the temple of the Lady of Pain, kept hidden from all but those who tend the sick.

They cannot be allowed to leave it - if they do, and forget even a single dose of the cocktail of medicines they're given, the shadows inside them so long denied will claim them. It is a horror beyond imagining to see such a thing, something the dutiful priests will never allow to happen.

Aurum would argue that the greater horror is being made to live the way he does, halfway between life and living death.

The priests dismiss it as the ramblings of a madman.
