Cautious' unhatched egg, along with two others were found on Elsewhere territory during the annual and mysterious migration of the Nocturne Dragons. The three eggs were foreign to the Elsewhere scouts, but they returned to the Keep with them regardless.

It took hours of Nicholas searching through old tomes and race records only to find a vague entry of a reclusive breed known as a Nocturne. The description of the egg matched those that were found in the territory, though any information on how to care for them was nowhere to be found. Not knowing what to do, but unwilling to abandon the eggs to fate, it was decided by the elder council that they would attempt to bring the eggs to term and pray that they hatched.

Winterbelle took it upon herself to care for them and it was her first rearing of a nest without the help of the Clan Mother. She nurtured the clutch meticulously, trying all the techniques she'd read about in different dragon cultures hoping that at least one would be right.

Some weeks late, her hard work paid off in the form of the delicate little egg shells beginning to crack. The first to emerge was a little emerald-winged beauty. Her eyes were deep pools of chestnut brown, indicating that she had been given the Earthshaker's blessing.

The other two eggs hatched bringing a sister and a small brother to the first born. The triplets all possessed different Elemental blessings, which puzzled the Elsewhere dragons since the eggs were all found nestled together. The Nocturnes grew, though it became evident that they would not get very large. Winterbelle became their surrogate mother, settling into a nurturing guardianship for the trio.

When it came time for their names to be chosen, Nicholas presented Winterbelle and the siblings with an old, tattered scroll he'd found in the archives. It seemed an obscure reference at first, but the more Winterbelle pored over it, the more evident it became that it was an old naming ritual from a Nocturne tribe.

Normally, the parents would choose the names of the hatchlings by using part of their own name and adding onto it. Fathers would name the sons, mothers the daughters. This naming ceremony would not take place until the hatchlings had successfully migrated home with their parents. But there was an interesting tidbit written in as well. In the case of orphaned Nocturnes, it was commonplace for the siblings to name each other; the oldest would name the second born, and the second-born would name the third, so on and so forth until the youngest who would name the eldest. Winterbelle wrestled with the idea of continuing the Nocturne tradition, substituting her own name for the mother's. But what of the brother? Perhaps Melek wouldn't mind his name being incorporated.

Excited to share the news with her hatchlings, Winterbelle sought them out. But much to her surprise, she found the three fledglings sitting together and speaking in hushed tones.

...so I think that you should be called Reckless, the eldest stated prudently.

Because I don't always do what you say? the second-born replied indignantly.

That...and last week you jumped headlong into a Fuiran nest to see if they would accept you as their own, the eldest deadpanned.

The second mumbled something inaudible and Winterbelle couldn't help but smile. It was a fitting name for the brash younger sister.

Your turn then, Reckless. What shall we call our brother?

Voiceless, The second sister stated, puffing out her chest proudly as if she'd known her answer all along. This earned her a stern look from her older sister.

Don't you think that's a bit rude?

Reckless furrowed her brows and looked between her sister and little brother. No. He doesn't have a voice, so dragons will know that from the start and that way they'll know to look or listen for other forms of communication, she reasoned firmly.

The eldest sighed and shook her head. The premise was sound, but she doubted any other dragon would think of it that way. But, his name was to be chosen by the second born...so Voiceless it was. But this brought up somewhat of a dilemma. He was the last, and he couldn't speak. So how was the eldest supposed to get her name?

But as Winterbelle observed, the youngest Nocturne turned to Reckless who seemed to have a connection with him that ran deeper than any other. With a series of clicks and rattles from his scale fringe, he actually communicated with her.

Really? Reckless asked with a tilt of her head. Her little brother nodded resolutely.

He says your name should be Cautious.

The eldest looked like she was about to protest until the name sank in. For a dragon without a voice, her little brother sure did have a sharp mind. Smiling, the eldest nodded. Cautious it is then.

Winterbelle withdrew then, joyful yet also tinged with sorrow. She could have named her adoptive hatchlings, but they still saw themselves as orphans. They always would be. But they'd have her to look after them and they'd have each other to lean on. With a bittersweet grin, Winterbelle set off to find Nicholas so that they could amend the resident archives to include the Nocturnes' new names.

Cautious found a passion for jewel craft and began an apprenticeship under Shiver. She isn't quite as skilled in imbuing magic into items, but she continues to learn. Cautious is often tasked with finding or otherwise acquiring jewels, gems and precious metals or stones of good quality for Shiver and herself to craft with.
