Biography
Olthros
Seeker of the Ancient Banescales
Deep within the shadows of the Tangled Woods lies a certain lair. Hidden by impenetrable mists, and nestled in the ridgeline of a cylindrical chasm where the light does not reach. Its denizens call it the Moonwatch Ridge. Named after the highest point in the ridgeline where the earth juts above the treeline, as if reaching for the night sky above.
It calls to the lost, and offers safety and respite to those who find it. Some dragons, upon finding this refuge, are merely grateful for their good luck, and rest before moving on. Others may feel a connection, or perhaps out of gratitude, they decide to stay. Over time, this gathering of wanderers grew, and so a lair was born. And it is from this reclusive lair of lost dragons where Olthros was sired.
A child of shadow and darkness, who has only known the light of the lantern against the beckoning night. And on nights of the full moon, one can occasionally see this dragon alone at the highest point of Moonwatch Ridge, watching the moon trace a path through the heavens.
Bio
The son of Kuromori and Gaspar, Olthros is a dragon hailing from the Clan of the Abyssal Mist. He is a curious dragon, having lived in one village his life. His only contact with the outside world was travellers and lost dragons who found their village. Many tell stories of the outside world and Olthros found himself wanting to explore the greater world. He would often go to the highest point of Moonwatch Ridge and stare off into the distance, imagining what wonders the world beyond held.
He used to be a Banescale, until an accident changed his life forever.
One day, on a routine gathering trip, Olthros and another boy from the village encountered a wild beast. Corrupted by the Shade, it was aggressive and unruly, attacking the two dragons on sight. Olthros battled the beast fiercely. In the end, the battle came to a climax at the top of a cliff, and both dragon and beast fell from a great height. The beast died immediately, but Olthros was also mortally wounded, having been impaled onto great spikes below.
The boy cried for help, gathering the villagers to the site of the battle. Olthros's life was fading away fast. But they had no way to save him.
It was then that a wandering coatl, who happened to find the village a couple days before, revealed that she had in her possession a Breed Change scroll. An extremely rare and potent magical item that could change a dragon's form into another breed. With this magic, Olthros's life could be saved, but he would have to live the rest of his life in a completely body.
To Olthros's friends and family, it was not even a decision. In order to save his life, his parents, as well as all the clan's council members agreed. The stranger held out the breed change scroll, and the potent energy within the scroll was released. It enveloped the Banescale whole, transforming his physical form into that of a gaoler. As a side effect, the spikes that had impaled him stayed through the transformation, becoming a part of his body. But his wounds were gone. His life was saved.
The villagers cheered, awestruck at the miracle they witnessed. They thanked the stranger for saving the life of one of their own.
But Olthros couldn't share the same excitement. He found his new body strange. He felt... off. He asked if there was a way to go back to being a Banescale. The travelling coatl smiled sadly and shook her head. If there was a way to turn back, it would only be known to the Banescales of old. But they are long gone. Banescales in the modern world have pretty much lost their whole history.
But that didn't mean it couldn't be restored.
Olthros wanted to return to being a Banescale, and the secret to doing so was lost to time. So then, the only way forward was for Olthros to rediscover his ancient heritage. If the secrets were lost, then he only need find it. What did it mean to be a Banescale? What did the ancient beings know? These are the questions he must answer if he were to seek to restore his form. In order to become a banescale once more, Olthros proposed he go on this journey of rediscovery.
He asked his family if he could go. And although reluctant, his father Gaspar and his mother Kuromori saw that this was something he needed. They nodded and gave him their blessing, as well as many hugs and tears.
And as the council members watched the scene, the omen readers saw within him a great destiny written into the stars.
Once, long ago, Banescales roamed the land as they did today. Somewhere out there, there had to be traces of their history, remnants of their lives, left amongst the ruins and remains of where they once lived. He would discover them, he told himself. He would go on a journey, to find his ancestral origins.
And one day, perhaps he can be a Banescale again.
