Though she was born somewhere in the regions of the Windswept Plateau, at the moment of her birth a fallen star splashed into the Sea of a Thousand Currents. The omen it portended was soon known: a female Mirror with stellar wings would arrive someday, and be destined for something great. Yet, for quite some time, she remained ignorant of what this prophecy meant for her, not just because she had been born so far away, but also because in appearance she had not resembled its subject at all. When she boarded the ship, she did so out of a sense of discontent. It had been plaguing her all her life: a weakness; a dissatisfaction; a sense that nearly everything about her was somehow wrong. Only the knowledge of her celestial protector — the sign of death and rebirth, and of renewal, and of transformation of the self — could bring her comfort. Then one night, as the light of the stars touched her through her cabin window, so too came her solace. First she grew, and her crest went rigid. Her second set of eyes opened, and she gained a newfound clarity. She felt a strange fizzing throughout her entire body, then a sense of resonance, as that perpetual wrongness faded and she finally felt at one with herself. Her crystalline sides segmented, a glyph appeared on her shoulder, and she whipped her head back and forth in awe as the starlight outside came to be reflected in her wings. It was not until later, after she had not been quite so overwhelmed by her own euphoria, that she realized what this meant for her. The stars know all. The foresight and understanding they possess is beyond those of any other beings. Theirs is the power to see the innermost self; their knowledge extends even to what has yet to pass, or what remains unknown even to oneself. And the inevitability of fate — even decided as soon as at one's birth — never assumes a self unchanging. Now she remains aboard the ship, watching and waiting. She knows little about what may be to come, but whatever it is, she will face it under the protection of her stellar patron — and as her true self. |
