When a storm thunders overhead, or dust clouds begin to form on the horizon, most dragons tuck away into their lairs to weather the events to come. But those who linger outside a little longer will be treated to a most unusual sight: dragons dancing amongst the rumbling thunderheads, or racing alongside the leading edge of a dust storm. Spotted only alongside the same clouds which decorate their scales, these dragons have become known as Painted Clouds.

The truth of their origin is yet unknown—and asking a Painted Cloud directly is a daunting task. Not only do they tend to reside in clouds where most dragons dare not fly, but they are also as transient as a storm, blowing in without warning and disappearing as soon as the sun breaks through the clouds. Their mystery has led to many dragons coming up with their own theories, whispered amongst clans or squabbled over in taverns. Some believe them to have been shaped from the clouds themselves, their markings a sign of their heritage. Others say that the Windsinger created these dragons and painted the clouds upon their scales himself, granting them the ability to, in turn, paint the skies with that which decorates them. And yet others think that these dragons were granted a sacred duty to shepherd and guide their clouds all across Sornieth.

Whatever the truth, one thing is certain: to spot one of the elusive Painted Clouds is a rare treat indeed.

From the furnaces of the Flamecaller rise thick clouds of ash and smoke, still glowing with the light of the flames down below. Most dragons wouldn’t dare fly in these plumes, fearful of the heat singing their scales, but it is amongst these dark clouds that Painted Ashes reside. Despite the consistency with which these columns of smoke rise from the Ashfall Waste, it is a rare sight to spot a Painted Ash, as they are nearly invisible unless you catch the reflection of lava off of their shimmering scales as they dart between plumes of ash.

Painted Ashes are not just elusive, but typically reclusive, making their natural camouflage a valuable asset to these smoke-dwelling dragons. They tend to make their dens either as offshoots of the vents they frequent, or very near to their exterior opening—the places where dragons are least likely to stumble upon them. Painted Ashes tend to favor, like most other Cloud variants, attire that is light and easy to fly in. Where they differ is that they often wear dark clothes that match the smoke they hide in or the firelight from below. It is not uncommon for their clothes to become worn out or tattered by the harsh conditions they live in, but Painted Ashes hardly seem to mind. On rare occasions, some Painted Ash dragons will take a liking to jewelries and trinkets and will wear those as they fly amongst the ash plumes, regardless of the fact that their brighter accessories make them easier to spot.

Owing to their roots, they like to create—but more whimsically than most other Fire dragons. Rather than forging clumsy metal into useful tools and parts, they prefer to work with glass. Glass can be shaped elegantly into beautiful, flowing spirals, full of color and life. Painted Ashes are particularly proud of their works, and display them around their home with great care and intent. The interior of a Painted Ash den, for those lucky enough to see one, is a far cry from the rest of the Ashfall Waste. A pocket of color amidst the greys and blacks outside, with each glassblown creation catching the light in just the right way to truly show off its best potential.
