He inherited the familial gargoyle curse -- he loses consciousness and turns to frigid stone when direct sunlight touches his body. He's stuck like this until he's kept in darkness for some time. He has an enchanted sunshade familiar he uses for coverage, and if forced to travel by daylight, he wraps his entire body in a cloak and sleeves. It isn't foolproof in crowded areas, though, so he tries to travel only after dusk.

His faceted eyes means he has trouble focusing on one spot and seeing clear images, which makes reading difficult. As a trade-off, he has also has superb night vision, even on a moonless night, and can see and react to moving objects much more quickly than the average dragon. Due to his mother, he has a keen sixth-sense, and while he has no ghostlike powers, he has the uncanny ability to walk and fly as silently as an owl.

Once widely known, the Spooklings family and their gargoyle curse have been relegated to mere myth, if they are spoken about at all. Barnaby has devoured books on gargoyles and such magic but has failed to find the information he seeks: a cure or a way to free his family from their curse. He has often wondered what it would be like to go out in broad daylight and take part in society without fear of freezing. He has decided to embark on a journey to find a cure for his curse... and maybe someone who might help him read more easily.
