Dumortierite, or 'Mortie' for short, is in charge of maintaining the seafood stocks for Clan Snastle, a task which he is exceptionally proficient at. As a water dragon, breathing underwater using his magic is a skill he learned in childhood, so rather than fishing from the surface he simply walks into the ocean. His heavy gems are the secret to his success. He keeps them chipped off just enough that they allow him to sink effortlessly to the seafloor, but never so heavy that they weigh him down too much. His glistening belly looks just like the surface of the water, allowing him to glide down onto unsuspecting schools of fish or crustaceans, scooping them up with a net. He is a quiet fellow who loves exploring the beauty of the sea, and has a huge respect for all the creatures inhabiting it. He carefully releases large breeding fish and lobsters with eggs, and never harvests more than the clan can use. He absolutely hates wasting food, the idea that a creature would die needlessly irritates him extremely, if the creatures of the sea can kill only what they need, so can dragons. While plant scraps are turned into fertilizer in the clan, any meat or seafood scraps he brings with him in a netted bag, leaving the bundle for fish to pick at and collecting the empty bag at the end of the day as a thanks to the ecosystems which sustain him. As Snastle is always on the move, Dumortierite must have a broad knowledge of marine and freshwater life from all the flights. He certainly does, but he'll be the first to tell you he's always learning, and he regards each new dive to be another chance to observe and learn. |
