Sworn in Eerie Synchrony



Gnaeus (left) and Servius (right) Vinicius Praesens is a young Chirurgeon who was drawn to the Oath after having his life miraculously saved in a collaboration between an Earth-flight Surgeon and a Fire-flight engineer. Their masterpiece, his Engine, puts him closely in tune with his natural magic, making him swift, strong, and sharp of mind, but leaves him emanating luminous--though harmless--exhaust and hosting a voracious appetite.

Praesens considers himselves to be one united being, though just as importantly one made of two seperate minds. The two of him converse aloud--and sometimes in the company of others--on the topics of emotions, aspirations, and impulses with the level of candor many would only recognize in their internal monologue. However, in high-stakes work situations, he is quiet and effortlessly synchronized.

“I, Praesens, swear by the Stormcatcher and call all the gods and goddesses to witness, that I will observe and keep this oath, to the utmost of my power and judgement. I will teach my art without reward or agreement, and impart my knowledge to all of those who are to follow. I will remember that medicine is both a science as well as an art and that sympathy and understanding may outweigh procedures and drugs. I will not be ashamed to admit when there is something I do not know or understand, and I shall call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed.

“I shall tread with care in the matters of life and death. It may be within my power to save or take a life, but above all, I must not play at God. I will prevent disease wherever I can. And if I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected and remembered hereafter.”
