Lophii

seafarers across the world have always told tales of hearing song travelling the ocean breeze, spinning stories (or perhaps truths) of sirens and other not-so-mythical creatures living stranded on untouched and wild islands. few believe it could be one of their own kind; depending on what parts of the ocean they've sailed, those few could be correct. sort of.

lophii is a mysterious dragon, only having been seen by a few and documented by even fewer. their den lies far beneath the ocean's surface, a crater filled with peculiar items stacked on shelf-like rock formations they've collected over their years. gills behind their horns give them the ability to breathe underwater and their powerful lungs give them the capability to breathe on land as well. not that they frequent dry land, anyway. their lungs often go unused.

they spend their time slinking through the ocean and joyfully singing tunes and rhymes to the moon, when they can see it's reflected light breaking through the ocean surface. their voice carries and ripples throughout the water so powerfully that it breaches the surface and carries on the wind, fading away in the cool night air to be caught on the ears of those near enough to hear.

when especially bored, lophii likes to follow ships, learn their songs, and eavesdrop on their chatter. out of all of the time they have spent traversing the sea, nobody has caught their eye more than a specific captain they eventually learned was named polar. they didn't know why they felt so drawn to her, but every night they would find her staring into the water on the bow of her ship and would stare back, singing softly. too shy to approach her, but more than happy to silently admire her beauty and hope perhaps their eyes would meet.

during a particularly nasty storm, lophii found their beloved captain sinking into the abyss of the ocean. it didn't take much thought for them to save her life, dragging her to the nearest coast and leaving her on the beach. they waited and waited by her side, ready to greet her when she woke up. when she did stir, however, they found that their heart raced and they grew too anxious to even speak, quickly scurrying off and disappearing back amongst the waves.

every now and again, lophii can see polar's impressive frame stalking the beaches, but can never manage the courage to show their face.

additional note: they are highly selectively mute. capable of speech, but it is uncomfortable for them to those who aren't especially close.
