Biography
EXCALIBUR BANESCALE GENERAL
Born of Fire and Flame, Banescale must rise!
Flamecaller’s Children, take now to the skies! |
THE TALE OF MOLTEN ICE
It felt like they were wandering the caverns for hours. Pharos barged on forward through the charred tunnels, not even looking behind to see if his older- adopted brother was catching up with his pace. He heard Rubato cry out:
"Wait! Slow down, by the Flamecaller!"
The younger Banescale had come to a halt, swiveling around and facing Rubato. A smug smile cracked across his gold snout as he gazed at the larger dragon.
"Oh, what, are you tired? A warrior? HA! Come on!" He teased Rubato with a laugh, the latter groaning at the sight of his brother running through these ancient caves like they were nothing.
Pharos knew well that Rubato wasn't enjoying this as much as he did. He was a Water element afterall, but what could hurt? Besides, the air was cold!... wait, why had it-
He narrowly avoided running straight into a stream of flowing lava, hissing at the inanimate fluid and raising a claw. The Banescale saw the other walk up beside him with his peripheral.
"Pharos?" He felt Rubato's wing spread infront of him. Looking up, he noticed the warrior's gaze was fixated on what was infront of him, and so he looked.
They stood in the entrance of one large chamber with more exits on each side. A pedestal carved out of the same volcanic rock stood there with what appeared to be cracked eggshells from Fire element eggs. Frozen statues of dragons - Banescale with frantic expressions on their HOPEFULLY perpetually still faces were everywhere.
"Oh my Gods." Pharos commented, stepping into the chamber.
He walked infront of one of the shining, ice statues, stopping to stare at it. It looked right back with apparent fear in it's frozen over eyes. Unsettling...
As Rubato followed behind him, Pharos looked up at one statue that was standing on the pedestal. It had it's wings open, roaring with both pain and rage. This was weirdly melancholic in a way. Nostalgia that they had never experienced and that never existed. Why was this sight so disturbing yet beautiful? It's like they were never meant to see this- no, they definitely weren't. They were trespassing, of course.
"Is this the ancient Gaolers' doing?" Rubato echoed from a bit behind him, staring at an ice statue of a Banescale that was attempting to bite a long-gone foe.
"Obviously."
Pharos found himself stepping up onto the rised stone, infront of the much, much larger than him frozen Banescale mentioned before. He noticed a knife- no, two knives strapped to it's leg by a sash with Fire's rune on it. Out of the corner of his eye, though, he noticed something orange and glowing.
It was in the chest of the dragon. The heart. Beating.
He stared at the glowing ember. He reached out with his wing to touch it. It was... warm. The young Banescale looked up at the statue again. It had varying shades of red everywhere but in it's chest area, unlike the other frozen dragons that were crystal blue. Wait a second- IT WAS TURNING MORE RED BY THE SECOND!
IT WAS UNFREEZING!
"Rubato, RUBATO!" Pharos screeched, stumbling back and basically falling off the pedestal. As he backed up into a wall, his older brother turned around in confusion- before freezing like the statues.
The duo watched in horror as a talon of the Elder tapped the stone, an unpleasant crack sounding from their limbs as they moved. Slowly, their wings folded back in with more ear-shattering noise. As the heart started up pick up pace, the eyes of the Banescale had turned into the fiery orange and their wounds reopened with what seemed to be lava quickly cascading out.
Yet their chest remained frozen.
The head snapped to look at them- literally. Pharos' heart nearly tore itself out of his own ribcage, reacting to the cracks by flinching.
"Who... are you?" Excalibur's voice echoed distantly, her being just as confused as they were horrified.
Excalibur, one of the Elders that were frozen in the Blacksand Annex's hatchery and was reanimated by the modern Banescale duo of Rubato and Pharos by complete accident... hopefully?
She used to be the war General, experienced in combat of both sky and land. However, the efforts she and the Banescale species as a whole to defend Fire's domain were, as we all know, futile. In the last attempt to protect the next generation, the Elders had gathered up at the nursery. While they had fallen, the eggs were safe at the mercy of the Gaolers and are now the Banescale we see today.
How Excalibur was unfrozen? It is unknown how exactly this came to be, but it's assumed that both the rising tempature of the Ashfall Waste combined with the fact the Ice magic had weakened before reaching and the possibility of only getting hit by the spell once, the Banescale was still alive. How her heart still managed to beat after all these hundreds of years is also not very clear, but hey! It happened!
Trivia:
- She is not a very good swimmer.
- Yes, her wounds are lava.
- She wields two daggers, a smaller one for slashing and a larger for stabbing. The second has a more blunt blade edge, but the fact it can be heated up into basically a lava knife is already enough.
- She is very reckless.
