______Reared under the dark shadow of the Baron, Sobek knew blood from a very young age. Of course, one would expect this; a hatchling with a guardian such as the famed Baron would understand violence and mayhem quickly. But the blood in Sobek’s early life was not introduced to him by the Baron - nor even introduced to him at all. For Sobek was born with just a little more anger in his veins than he might have, and although it was tempered by hunger - a hunger that would become more defined as he grew older - it guided him from the start. ______His first fight was with a playmate, in the confines of Sobek’s private playroom. A young mirror hatchling, a dragon smaller than Sobek, had been offered to keep him company for the day. (Dragons often pushed offers of playmates towards the Baron in the hopes it would earn his good graces.) ______Sobek’s memories of the incident blurred into confusion quickly after, and he never remembered why or how the argument began; never pinpointed the origin of the rage that bubbled inside him, fast to appear and fast to intensify. There were two aspects of that day Sobek never forgot: that rage, and the aftermath. ______Everything happened too quickly for Sobek to take any of it back. There was quick adrenaline and action, and suddenly the young mirror was being spirited away by a caretaker, looking ever so small in adult arms. One paw, bigger in proportion than the rest of the hatchling’s body, was clenched over their eyes on the right side of their face. Sobek had struck out there with his claws. ______The domed playroom, which Sobek usually loved for its acoustics, was then filled with the worried murmurs of attendants as they checked him over for signs of injury. But the only wound that day was that of the little mirror’s eyes. ______Sobek never saw the dragon again after that day, which, while not an inordinary loss, was significant to Sobek. The Baron never mentioned it, not outright. Sobek was never truly punished for it. That very evening, however, the Baron summoned Sobek for one of his scarce conversations. Sobek rarely saw the older dragon, who he adored, and so the travesty of the day dulled slightly under his excitement. ______As they walked together, the Baron counseled him. The Baron did not condemn Sobek; for his actions, emotions, or the result. He simply suggested that Sobek use that talent of his towards more… productive means, rather than attacking a harmless playmate. ______Sobek remembered the Baron’s words for a long time after that day, but had little idea what the Baron meant. As time passed, Sobek continued to live wild and unchecked, rowdy with any dragon who would give him the time of day (though he rarely had playmates his age after that incident). As he grew older, however, and Sobek began to pay attention to the state of the world around him, however, he grew less interested in roughhousing for simple play. He became interested in fighting for a purpose. ______Given free reign of the Baron’s estate, Sobek had every opportunity to hone his fighting skills. He trained daily, and became adept at both hand-to-hand combat and weaponry. Although he never again seriously maimed another sparring partner, it was only because his opponents were just that. Sparring partners. Nothing could be gained from hurting them. ______When Sobek reached adulthood, he looked every bit the menacing warrior he was, with piercing red eyes and fierce fans sprouting along his spine. He was every bit the prodigy the Baron had hinted at so long ago. Finally, he could turn his tendencies elsewhere… to more productive means.
