Biography

Coal is a type of fossil fuel. It's creation starts with the sun.

Plants perform photosynthesis and absorb energy from the sun.
When plants die, some of them are preserved from natural decay by falling into water!
A collection of this plant material, called pete, becomes buried over time.
Over a period of 1million years the pete is put under a lot of pressure and heat.
The result is coal!

(Higher quality coal was actually heated much more during it's creation.)


Coal and Nuclear Fission (the division of particles) are the main sources of energy input in a Rankine Cycle. Coal is burned in order to boil water: the start of electricity generation! (See my mate for more!)
