In all the Tangled Wood, there is no predator quite as fearsome as Lylei. If you told that to any of Ulalume's visitors, though, they might stare, or even laugh. The old Nocturne, the one wrapped in a raggedy wolf's pelt, is the greatest hunter the Shadowbinder has ever seen? Surely those bracers clatter in the dark, surely that cape snarls in the brambles.
If they see Lylei return from the hunt, though, they will laugh no more.
Something of a solitary dragon, Lylei doesn't concern himself with the opinions of others, least of all visitors to Ulalume. His allegiance is to the clan, which has provided him a safe place to rest his bones between hunts, not to mention something to hunt on behalf of, but he has never felt the urge to conform to expectation. Nocturnes as a whole may be a more social species, but he is not the representative of all his kind. In fact, he is quite comfortable being the outlier.
It makes others afraid to engage. They stare, more than anything, and occasionally the young ones point. He tips his pelt to them, bobbing the wolf's head just a little. At least those little scraps have the guts to say what they mean, even if their mothers chastise them for it. But in the end, they leave him to his own devices, and that suits him just fine.

The only company Lylei really needs is the dark, dark wood, and maybe a little sliver of the moon from time to time. He's been hunting in the Tangled Wood since the far-off days of his youth, and though the forest tends to change, a little trick to appease the Shadowbinder, he still knows it better than any other hunter around. He can track prey through the densest brambles, spy their tracks along even the most twisted streams. This is his home, and more than that, it is his hunting ground. If he wants to hunt, then hunt he shall.
Sometimes he misses the days when hunting was a challenge, of course. When he was young and full of more impulse than common sense, hunts were violent affairs. Now, though, he's precise, able to fell a creature from quite the distance if he chooses to employ ranged weapons, or able to dispatch them quickly in a close quarters fight. It is by his efforts that Ulalume remains well fed where fresh meat is concerned. Bless those young hunters for trying, especially since they'll get better someday, but they just can't keep up with the greats. Then again, maybe it would be nice to rest his weary bones, pick up a new hobby while the whippersnappers go out and get their claws dirty. Lylei always has wanted to give whittling a try, or maybe the flute. Shoot, couldn't he do both if he really puts his mind to it? Of course, can he give up the hunt to begin with? Lore by Tues. |
