Biography

This piece of note paper is left on the muddy ground, soaked in dirty water and speckled with dirt. It is almost illegible, and has a distinct footprint stamped into it, as if a very small dragon ground its heel against it before walking off.

It reads:

'Date: XX.XX.XXXX

'When an irritant slips inside of an oyster, aragonite and conchiolin are slowly layered over top of the offending object. This results, in some specimens and over long periods of time, in a pearl forming. A beautiful thing formed as the byproduct of trying to protect itself from a grain of sand or other materials, it seems almost metaphorical.

'Perhaps we never paid enough attention to the fact that, in order for us of dragonkind to so much as check for those almost fantastical objects called pearls, let alone to take it for ourselves, you must kill the oyster.

'In the search of beauty, we cause death. In the hope of beating the odds, of winning against fate, we take away the chance of another life to have thrived...

'Or perhaps my dire thoughts are caused by the gloom. I write tonight because our exploratory vessel has been moored for some time due to inclement weather. Too much fog to safely leave this shore and head back home, I'm told. I'm no seafarer by trade, just a gemologist coming along for the paycheck involved in helping assess the freshwater pearls this hired crew has found.

'And find pearls we have — I've rarely seen such fantastic specimens. The colors defy belief, from soft buttery pinks to sharp antique-looking stones, even to a clouded purple I've never seen anywhere else. But...

'It troubles me. Amongst all of them, we found one black pearl. I could hardly believe my eyes — go back a few pages and read my notes for yourself. This pearl was nearly as big as one of my own scales, oblong and well-balanced. But I looked at it and I...

'I thought what I have written at the top here. About the sacrifice of the mussels and oysters so that we may find their pearls. I was chased in my sleep afterwards by black, shapeless phantoms. Even now, in the corners of my eyes, sometimes I see them.

'When I woke, the specimen was gone. I assumed a crew member stole it — black pearls are excessively rare but well-known, and it would be easy to sell once we got back home. Rooms were searched; nothing. But my nightmares remained. I almost wonder...

'Well. It's late. I'm getting ahead of myself, and bothered by all this fog. I shall write again tomorrow.'

Another entry follows:

'Date: XX.XX.XXXX

'It came again tonight. In the corners of my eyes, in the fleeting moments between snuffing my candle and the flame truly being extinguished. Every blink of my eyes, each moment I turned my gaze and invited the blurring at the edges of my vision. Wherever I cannot directly look, there it is.

'I am loathe to snuff out my candle again tonight. I shall simply have to make some excuse for why I need more of them to keep in my quarters. As long as we are docked here, and prisoners of this storm...

'I am worried that whatever caused our black pearl to disappear, it is neither natural nor happy that we are here. But will it let us leave?'

If you search the muddy banks of this freshwater lake, however, you may come upon sizable mussels. And you've just learned what might be inside them...
