B I O G R A P H Y
Virgi knew well what the trials of the Necromancer would require. Having hatched and been raised by two who had undergone the trials, it was only a given. From a young age Virgi’s clutch, like prior clutches, were taught the ways of Necromancers, what to expect in the trials, the ins and outs of Necromancer society. They all knew they would take the trials once old enough. Older clutches had, and future clutches would.
So of course Virgi knew. And of course, prepared accordingly, using free time to train and research extensively in the hopes of being stronger and better when the time came.
But despite the preparations, Virgi struggled at the trials. Getting infected was easy enough. But the resulting sickness was a true uphill battle. The sickness clung to the mirror like a heavy weight, and with far worse symptoms than any sickness experienced by the drake in the past.
Virgi managed to beat it back, of course. Through sheer strength and force of will, as was expected.
One day too late.
Ashamed, Virgi did not stick around for long once recovered enough to flee. The trials had been completed, fate had deemed the mirror’s role to be as a Wraith. Not Ghoul, not Necroservus, nowhere near Necromancer. Something that hit the uncertain middle ground between Ghoul and Servus.
It was a fate better than slow death from disease, yes. But an unwanted fate all the same. Virgi had expected a better performance, and had trained so hard to be a Necromancer proper.
But that was not in the cards.

And so, aimless, Virgi wandered. A wide berth was given to the Plague flight, as the concentration of Necromancers there was not ideal, not with Virgi’s new life and situation. Ashamed as Virgi was, donning a helmet to hide the shame behind was the natural next step. Even if it left the rest of the drake’s body, infected stripes of plague and all, readily obvious to anyone so much as mildly aware of Necromancer society. And the helmet alone would most certainly not cut it. Each new piece of apparel gained felt like a further relief. A chestplate helped ease the anxious ache in the heart. Drapes around the wings made flight feel easier. Tassets and scarves and wrappings helped rebuild lost confidence, little by little, piece by piece. The secrecy and imperceptibility Virgi chose to be surrounded with meant constant travel. But in that travel, the drake gained knowledge. Knowledge of all kinds, from troupes of Snappers to Spirals with a million interesting fun facts. Virgibacillus’ eyes were opened to the vastness of what paths could be taken, what one could choose to do. |
As expected for Virgi, with a new focus, came learning. Studying and gathering what information could be found. Libraries, of course, held a wealth of information. And, even better, information readily available, not locked behind high positions and connections. And once Virgi found a certain library, full of plenty of that information, easily spent days at a time reading and consuming more and more. But eventually, the Mirror’s dedication would be noticed. A Lich, who worked at the library, noticed the lone Wraith, snout buried in book after book and taking active notes with every page and chapter. The starry-eyed fascination and interest was admirable, and this deep interest ended up making her enjoy seeing the Mirror in the library. And yet, beyond that, she recognized what she saw in the armour and quiet avoidance of all attention, and felt a kinship with the drake, both hiding what had become of them. All of this, within a few months, led to Virgi being presented with an offer by the Lich librarian. She knew a taxidermist, and was willing to get Virgibacillus an apprenticeship with them. Virgi accepted without hesitation. |
