Broth

Broth could feel strength pulsing through his body, his vision going red and tinting everything around him in the process. Whatever they injected him with stung so badly he'd bitten one of the researchers despite being bound by straps. He'd ripped one of the restraints just to reach the man with his vicious fangs. He hissed, starting to tear the rest of his restraints while they staff around him panicked and rushed around. The mixture burned like acid through his veins, driving him further to madness. That was the first time he'd ever harmed anybody and he hoped it was the last. Several weeks later and the soft-hearted Mirror recoiled from the thought of violence. Or rather, he always had but he only allowed himself to be driven to such lengths once. Now he had a better hold on himself. Frustratingly enough, the researchers cared little for the hatchling's desires. They wanted to test him, to train him and put him in front of foes so he could defeat them. His altered body was powerful, so much so that it frightened the poor thing. He refused to give into his urges. They would yank him from his cage despite the cries and toss him in a room across from another hatchling of a similar size. This one would hiss and cower at him, spitting in fear. The researchers would use poles to prod at the two, trying to push them closer together in an attempt to force them into combat. The scientists knew their newest strain had been successful, they knew it the moment he busted free of his restraints all those weeks ago. During the attack the mirror dragon displayed such brilliant strength and yet as he was shoved into an enemy, he just refused to react with ferocity. Instead, he started to talk to it which only further infuriated the scientists. "It's alright, I won't hurt you." He called out to the other hatchling. His words were clumsy, a bit sluggish as he tried to remember how to speak. It was difficult when he wasn't able to socialize much. After all, he was locked away from most of the others considering the type of testing they were doing on him. Broth was forced to live in solitude most of the time but he could still speak. He wouldn't lose his voice. Apparently a few soft words were enough to take the fight out of the other hatchling. Upon further inspection he could see marks from where the researchers had injected this other hatchling. He wondered if they had failed with this one and now resorted to using it as bait. "We can be friends, my name is Broth." He continued, each word slow and deliberate as he wrapped his mouth around them. The other hatchling seemed to brighten up, though apparently they were not capable of speech. Now that their head was lifted, he could see exactly why that was. They opened their mouth just a little in a smile and their mouth was filled to the brim with so many sharp teeth. Too many sharp teeth. It was frightening to witness but they were just as frightened as he was, weren't they? The researchers gave up and he was removed from his new friend, most likely to never see them again. Broth got a little bit of satisfaction in knowing he'd be written down as a 'failure' in their research. (by Azabelle) |

It was hard for Broth to tell time, how much time had passed or what time it was. There was no day and night cycle down in the lab and the scientists didn’t exactly tell him what time it was. Down here the only cycle Broth knew was one of violence. He’d be fed once a day and then forced to starve. The scientists had gotten a brilliant idea a while ago and decided if he would not kill then he would stay hungry until his instincts forced him to kill to satisfy his ever growing hunger. Broth was bigger now, he wasn’t sure how much bigger but judging from how the other hatchlings seemed to be growing smaller than him it was clear that he was a fast grower. Although seeing so many smaller creatures around him caused a quiet voice to gnaw at the back of his mind, food, he was so hungry. Broth merely turned away, he had an iron grip on his will and he would never let himself fall to cannibalism, never. The smell of blood made things even worse, it enticed him, Broth caught himself hungrily staring at other dragons or even scientists multiple times but he never swayed further than that. Horror seeped into Broth’s mind the times he stared at the scientists and imagined himself tearing flesh from bone. They spoke about him but Broth could barely focus on their voices. The fear he had once felt had since long started turning into rage and hatred, add starvation to that mix and you got a very unstable dragon. He did not want to hurt anyone but sometimes it was all he could think about, they hurt him, they will keep hurting him. Why should he care about not hurting them? Blackouts the scientists called it. When Broth would sit completely still and just.. stare. They had no idea what horrors were actually going through the mirrors mind during these blackouts. They only knew how to stop it, by shocking the hatchling out of it with electrical rods in the process only making it worse. If they noticed his aggression worsening they didn’t do anything about it. Instead the experiments continued as usual, two hatchlings facing each other and being forced to fight. While the urge remained to kill, Broth never indulged; he instead spoke to the other hatchling clinging to his ability to speak as well as his own sanity. But as the scientists got more desperate for him to fight the experiments and punishments got worse. Broth grew to hate the electrical rods they would poke and prod him with sending painful jolts through his body, a hatred that bubbled up until one day it burst. During a routine experiment where Broth was forced into combat and as usual; refused, he was separated from the other hatchling and a familiar scientist shouted in frustration at him, he was violently tugged away no doubt to be given another set of painful experiments. Broth watched the scientist numbly, not moving until something snapped. They had grown lenient. They were so used to Broth’s lack of putting up a fight that they had forgotten what kind of danger Broth truly was. It wasn’t until Broth was violently shoved backwards that he came to it again, blood and gore was splattered all over him and the ground in front of him. The metallic taste of blood made him twitch but he wasn’t given much time to think before something wrapped around his neck and pulled him backwards. The scientists shouted at each other as Broth was transported to a new area in the facility, he felt completely numb as he was escorted into a white room with a bright white light shining down at him. He had been here once before, the isolation chamber. | xxx |

Broth didn’t know what to feel, he wanted to feel horrified at his own actions but he felt.. numb. The thick white walls of the isolation chamber felt more oppressive than ever as his heart thumped in his chest. Images of the violence that had just unfolded clung to his mind as he curled into a ball in the corner of the room. He licked his lips and felt a disturbing satisfaction in his stomach, with a startle he realized he wasn’t hungry anymore. written by Thirtyninjas |
