v77Qzd9.png The cave was wet and smelled of things long past, a faint hint of the unknown and changes horrifying yet to come but still oncoming nonetheless. How had you gotten here? Your feet had lead you here, drawn to a part of the forest that you had never seen before as though by some unseen hand. You had been here many times and yet, the path that had beckoned you seemed new, unnoticed until now as it had picked through fields and ancient woods. It had gone on for miles, it felt, pulling you onward until the sky darkened with brambles and the trees themselves seemed to grow teeth. It made your skin crawl, but you were exhausted, and above all, you were lost.

The night had come like a razor blade, you could hear things in the woods you could not identify and, in the light of your torch, the cave seemed the only refuge for the evening. A call and nothing scattered from within it, so you entered, terrified, and hoping that you could keep your light alive to make it through the dark.

As it grew later, the dark became more vicious. It closed in around you. Suffocating, heart racing, the things it contained growing ever nearer with rattling claws and gnashing teeth. You feared you might not survive. But, just when you were loosing the glimmer of your fire, just when it seemed you would be eaten by the encroaching gloom, there came a voice from behind, “What young thing has come to my cave?” it asked.

You jumped, turning quickly as the area was flooded with light making your eyes burn.

There before you stood a Skydancer, ageless and wise, pitch black as the night she banished around you. Her form was draped in glittering candles, face covered in bone.

“What has brought you here, young thing?” She asked, her voice hollow like the trees, deep as rolling thunder. Lost, you mutter out. Her head tilts as she looks at you, a bleakness of time in her eyes that was immeasurable. Her scales shimmered a nameless color, shifting through purples and blacks like the great expanse of the universe which she shielded herself from in the cave. She looked upon you like something inconsequential, and, perhaps, you were were, things that passed so briefly in time that they were left to rot in the pit of forgotten memories nearly instantly.

She smiled. “Come, I shall lead you home.”

At first, you hesitated. You didn’t know this dragon, but behind you was the woods, unforgiving and somehow accepting that you were already caught made the choice easier. You pushed forward with her. She beckoned you deeper into the cave, the walls clawed out by what seemed like her own hands centuries ago. She moved like liquid water, the candles upon her back casting monstrous shadows upon the calcite walls. Stalactites reached down towards their younger and growing brethren down below. Soon, there were paintings, vast arrays of symbols unknown to you snaked their way in pitch black paint up and around in great arches. How incredibly ancient were these? Were they here before her or had she stepped out of time and done them herself? “Do not stare too long, young thing, its impolite to stare and they know that.”

So you did as you were told, keeping your head down as she lead the way. Soon enough, you could see it, there in front of you, an opening filled with white light it seemed. She gestured towards it, “Go home. Do not follow hunches in the woods for I can not help you again,” she warned. As you clamored up towards it, knuckles scraping against bare cave walls, you found yourself crawling out into the daylight. A field you knew well sprawled out in front of you. You were ecstatic, confused, but hopeful.

Thank you, you turn to say to her but she is gone. The night, the cave, the dragon, all disappeared with nothing left but a fading memory in the new day sun.
