He has never made any attempt to correct those that refer to him as a 'paladin'. Nautilus is not officially a member of Errant's knights, but more of an unwanted vigilante. His fervor to rout the supposed evil he claims to exist within the Tangle has, frankly, caused more harm than good.
Any sort of oddness, whatever that entails, is a target. Nobody is quite sure exactly what this constitutes — so far, Nautilus has targeted dragons who have worn the 'robes of cults' (hats with feathers on them); those of 'wicked eye' (sleeping on the boardwalk); and traders of 'devilish curios' (apples).
While this was somewhat amusing at first, Nautilus has seen his efforts as ineffective and has increased aggression against these alleged evildoers. His ability to adapt to life on the complex layout of th Tangle, and indeed in the seas beneath it, have made him difficult to corner. Errant has had his claws full trying to stymie the Sandsurge's spree, but so far, to no avail.
