Kaukyma is the second child of the clan's founder, Brennen. The circumstances of Kaukyma's conception were undeniably tragic, and as a result, his essence manifested into an incarnate of rot and decay- a stark contrast to his sister, Yan'ha. His mere existence can cause those around him to fall ill and plant life to wither away instantly, in part as a result of the noxious fog his body constantly emits. If you manage to get him to talk to you, he will tell you that this is the reason he isolates himself from others- and his mother especially- but that's only partially the truth. In reality, he could easily control the rate at which things decay around him, but it provides him the much easier excuse for his isolation than the truth. He avoids interactions with others not solely because of the destruction he can cause, but because of the knowledge that he was, to some degree, unwanted. While his mother never once actively showed any sign of hostility or resentment to him, he could always feel the pain she felt when she looked at him. He knew that behind every forced smile and attempt at pleasant greetings, she was haunted by an agonizing memory- and decided it would be better if she didn't have to keep being forced to remember. |

When B asked him to join as a member of Duskbreak, he simply couldn't understand why she would want him around. It took a great deal of convincing for him to relent and agree, but ultimately he decided that, if him joining her would make her happy to some extent, it was the least he could do. He finds himself rather at home amid the land of rot- as B knew he would- and spends the majority of his time wandering the contagion alone. When he does return to the clan, he speaks to no one- save for a single dragon that he developed a deep connection with- much to his own surprise. While wandering the outskirts of the clan's territory, he stumbled upon a dragon he'd never seen before. They were sat alone, staring out into the vast fields of decay, thick lines of smoke billowing from their body. He could sense a distinct loneliness from the dragon, and against his usual nature, he approached him, sitting by his side. At first, the two exchanged no words, but eventually the dragon broke the silence. "You're... hhh... alone too... aren't you...?" Fortis told his story to Kaukyma, who held only sympathy for him, understanding immediately why he had been drawn to him. Fortis was much like himself- his presence had a tendency to cause others pain and destruction, and for their sake, he isolated himself from them- even those that considered him a friend. As a result of this mutual understanding, the two developed a close friendship, and Fortis became the only dragon Kaukyma can be found willingly speaking to and spending time with. |
