Marlais was the son of two alchemists. They were barely scraping by under their King's iron fist - starving for days at a time, with no help in sight. Marlais grew and learned and resented the King for the neglect of his people. The King, swimming in his piles of treasure and eating all the food he ever asked for. Marlais watched. He learned. His plan grew along with him, and eventually the day came. Flasks were made; poison, acid, disease. If one didn't work, the other had to. He would free the Kingdom and his mothers from suffering. He slinked into the castle easily after putting the guards to sleep with a chemical mixture. His attempt was successful, but his escape was sloppy and he was caught by awakened guards.

Afterward, he was taken to the Island of Chains, stripped of everything to his name, and imprisoned. He remained there, counting the days until his death would come too, without seeing his mothers ever again. That was, until Elwynne appeared, like an angel, and freed them both.
