Sunshine

Sunshine remembers it vividly - the day she was old enough to go beyond her hometown's gates. The young and eager hatchling was accompanied by her watchful parents as they made their way to the great cliff near their home. It was early morning and Sunshine recalls how the dew stuck to her belly and how her playful jumping in the rye field earned her plenty of tiny droplets on her nose.




And there - as they emerged from the fields, Sunshine was stunned at the view presented to her. Ocean, as far as the eye could see together with the sun that rose above the horizon. Sunshine will forever remember this moment - the sun's light reflected in the ocean, slowly basking her body in sunshine. The turning of the skies blue hues resembling the ones in her shimmering, outstretched wings. Her curious, bright eyes taking in all of it, as she turns around to watch the land around her wake up. The light infused all and basked everything in a mesmerizing golden glow.



They spent the day wandering along the cliff, visiting nearby ruins and forests and Sunshine was eager to get to know these new sights. The day ended with them upon a tower, watching as the sun set, briefly setting the skies ablaze before it dipped beyond the far shores.



These days Sunshine has taken up flying near the great cliff, nosediving along the clifface, down the dizzying heights towards the ocean before letting the wind carry her up. But her favourite activity is flying above the wheat fields, during times the sun turns them into a golden sea. She made it a challenge to fly close, so that she could feel the wheat ears tickle her belly, but without disturbing the calm swaying of the field with her wings.



Sunshine grew up in a familiy of dragons with similar colours to her own, so she never quite understood what exactly made her colours that special or why that made her a "treasure". She remembers her great-great-great-grandfather Durian telling her stories about his childhood in the Sunbeam Grotto, and more stories followed about his father and his grandmother Sunset. She realized one day that it was the selfsame Sunset everyone kept comparing her appearance to! Instead of being annoyed because others could not see her as just her, young Sunshine felt flattered. Sunset seemed like such a gentle and friendly dragon, full of compassion. It made Sunshine want to grow up into someone that was just as kind as her!
