“And dive!” she shouted, gesturing with her banner.

The young class of trainees dove toward the ground. They were nothing close to the precise formations they’d perfect later, but they tried. Most missed the training dummies with their claws and teeth. A couple scored hits.

“Good, Typhani! Good, Emmet!” Sascha called out. “Now, everyone up!” She waved the banner as the group flew back into what passed for formation in the hatchling classes. Some of the other battlemasters dreaded working with the youngest dragons, because the whole time was spent correcting form mistakes and cheering hits that would get the adolescent or young adult classes sent to run full sets of practice drills as punishment. But Sascha liked working with the babies. It paid off slowly, but it paid off. You could always tell, in the adolescent groups, which ones had trained with the clan as children and which ones had stayed with their home clans longer.

“Tighten up that formation! Lerdy, back with the others! Don’t fly ahead! Emmet, face forward! You can talk to your friends later!” The class followed her instructions and she gestured with the banner. “And dive!”

The dragons dove again. It was the first day of diving for this group. Usually they’d still be flying in formation and practicing same-height aerial attacks and defenses, but this group was faster than most. So they’d started diving on this crisp, cold winter’s day, instead of waiting for the spring mud to soften the ground for the youngsters. When they were first learing, it wasn’t unusual for a few to dive so enthusiastically that they smacked into the earth. But Sascha thought this class was ready. She’d made them put helmets on, and they were used to bumps and bruises and nicked scales already, even with their wooden weapons and enforced soft sparring rules.

Out of the corner of her eye, Sascha thought she saw a movement. Carefully keeping her stance the same, not looking directly at the movement, she formed up the class again. Just as she was about to give the dive order, there it was again, a quick flash against the snow outside the training ring.

“Good job, everyone!” Sascha yelled, signalling basic commands with the banner. The young dragons landed, forming up into a defensive formation. Bellies were shielded by the ground, wings were tucked down. Helmets and scales formed the shell. This was one of the first thing the trainees were taught, and it was not uncommon for this command to be given in the middle of unrelated lessons. Sascha was glad for that, glad that she could give the signal and expect the students to be disappointed with the interruption, instead of panicked.

She dove down and dropped the banner on the frozen ground, then turned swiftly and skimmed across the ring toward the movement she’d spied.

Three harpies jumped out. Two magic users and a fighter, Sascha thought. The magic users started casting their spells, aiming toward the hatchling formation.

Sascha roared as loudly as she could, diving down and colliding with one of the harpies, knocking it backward. She flipped her body in the air, winding around the other magic user and pulling her coils tight. The fighter was clawing at her, beating its wings in her face.

But Sascha was the great-granddaughter of the clan’s most celebrated warriors, and had been taught almost before she was out of her egg how to fight the Beastclans. She fought skillfully, keeping the magic users unbalanced so they couldn’t attack the hatchlings while using her best aerial maneuvers to fight against the physical harpy. And so by the time the guards came, alerted by her roar, the harpies lay still and defeated at the edge of the ring.

Sascha knew these guards, of course. She still drilled regularly with the guard to keep her skills up, and these two had been her students not too long ago. But she was no longer their teacher, so she kept quiet as they examined the scene. One of the guards flew off to alert the officer on watch, while the other began searching outward for more of the stinking harpies.

Sascha checked herself over quickly. She had a few superficial injuries, but nothing that needed a battle surgeon. “All right!” she yelled to the class, picking her banner back up. The formation was still intact, although she saw some shaking and quivering where some of the hatchlings were obviously terrified. “Good job, recruits! Excellent formation! Now let’s head back to the barracks! You’ve earned some free time this afternoon!”

As Sascha herded her charges to the nearest den entrance, she reflected on her day and mentally started composing the report she would present at the next council meeting. She would downplay her own role in it, of course. Being proud was not a trait encouraged by her family. But as she listened to the students whisper to each other in awe of her fighting prowess, she did allow herself one small smile.

Where is the nicest place you have been to in fall?

"You know, I understand why we migrated to Earth, but I miss the brilliant changing of the leaves in the Viridian Labyrinth every autumn."

What is the best weapon you've ever owned? What made it so good?

"I don't use them often, but I was given a set of wing spikes by my great-grandparents when I was accepted into the guard as a young adult. Every time I strap them on, I feel like my family is fighting by my side."

What are some outdated customs that don’t make sense anymore, but people still follow them simply out of tradition?

"Never wear a helmet indoors. Why, though? I mean, I still don't do it, but I think it's silly."
