In a lesser dragon, her actions could be construed as a sigh. But Ambrym was not a lesser dragon, she was a Nocturne; a true child of the Shadowbinder, she had no parentage known besides the fortune that smiled upon the clan who found her egg.

“The spell worked,” she told the other, whose disgruntlement was clear to even the blind. “The magic isn’t at fault.”

“We needed a spell of concealment,” the dragon growled, glaring. “It concealed nothing!”

“Nothing?” Ambrym asked sharply. “Not even your own rapacious desire, nor your fellows’ impatience? What about your shadows, your tracks? Your intent, from the victim?”

The dragon drew up, masking uncertainty with intimidation. “It did not conceal our presence!”

She spat the shadow of flames. The other dragon flinched away before hastily turning it into a gesture of anger.

“You didn’t ask for a spell to conceal your presence,” she said. “You asked for a spell of concealment.”

Fools, the lot of them. They never seemed to understand that she had not the power to will magic into behaving, only the power to channel its passage. She sent the latest unsatisfied client to go stew over his own inadequacy at defining his desires.
