Umber dies after Shade shoots him between his eyes. His face is permanently disfigured and it leaves him blind as a ghost. His face often scares away the mansion's visitors, and sometimes it startles Shade and the others that live there. Umber is quiet and lonely because of it. Shade will lead him around if he needs to, but other than that, the two don't interact. Umber is quite fond of singing, but didn't realize that his appearance plus eerily quiet (and soft) voice would terrify people. He also plays violin. Though he is blind, he has memorized the strings, how he needs to hold the bow (and where to hold it), where to put his fingers, and even compose entire songs. Whenever he plays his violin, everything in the mansion goes silent, as the sounds echo through the vast halls. Alex, another ghost, likes to sit by him and listen, occasionally talking to Umber. Alex is one of Umber's only companions, and the only other person/ghost that isn't scared of how he looks.

One time, one of the ghosts on the mansion (Dune) got sick of the sound of Umber’s violin, so he took it and smashed it. Shade went to have it repaired, but Umber stopped playing as much since then. He’s afraid of it happening again. When he does play, though, it's usually for a short time and much quieter.

It gets worse, since the wound on his face gets infected. He is a ghost, but can still feel everything that a normal human can- the only difference is that he's dead. His face already looks awful, but parts of it have to be cut out to actually treat his infection. What remained of his eyes were also taken out. His face now looks like someone tore it out. His nose and mouth are unaffected and look fine. His eyes, forehead, and parts of his cheeks, however, look horribly disfigured, and from afar, it may appear like he has no face at all.

After receiving the (painful) treatment to his infection, he could feel how much his face had changed. He was worried that Alex would be repulsed by him and refuse to be around him. Now, when Umber cries, there are no tears, only sorrowful, quiet noises. Alex found him crying in the halls a day after his treatment, and although he was shocked to see Umber's face, he assured Umber that the two would remain friends regardless of how he looked.

Umber encounters Lyric about a week later. Lyric, disgusted by Umber's looks, threatens to hurt him. Umber panics. He tries to use one of his ghost abilities to run through a wall, but ends up falling through the floor. He falls into the basement of the Hawthorne Mansion, in a locked and secluded room. That was the exact room that Dune had been locked in as punishment for smashing Umber's violin. Umber was stuck with him for weeks until someone realized he was down in the basement. Over those few weeks, Dune apologizes to Umber for everything he'd done and tried to make it up to him. He took care of Umber while they were in the basement, and by the end of it all, had regained Umber's trust.
