Dad had consorts.

When the thought occurred to Terrence as a child, his disposition changed overnight. Gone was the timid child hiding in the glades of the Worldedge Wetlands. Thievery and cunning – once feared as the traits of notorious villains in bedtime stories – became his staple attributes. He learned who to talk to. Certain drakes ranked higher than others, and he quickly leveraged his way into getting what he wanted out of them without damaging his dignity. With time, he learned how to give his elders the slip in the swamps.

After a fight he wanted nothing to do with, Terrence donned the cape and composure of a senior rogue and left without saying goodbye. The criminal element of the Shrieking Wilds took him in. He accepted jobs from fickle drakes, used his magic to dodge wild beasts and pluck valuables out of pockets and homes, then left with money for his work. It was a simple life.

One day, he heard his father’s voice while out stealing in the boughs of the Behemoth. The old man was raving about his sister’s talents in combat, trying to get her to enlist as a Treewarden. Terrence turned away. But the officers laughed, saying they were looking for trainees to go to the Ashfall Waste. His heart sank when his sister gleefully agreed. He overheard the unit she was soon assigned to and completed his last job as a criminal.

The Treewardens happily placed him in the same unit as his sister when he arrived to obtain a commission. It took months for them to arrive south. Smoke constantly billowed out of the ground. His fellow trainees didn’t think to bring masks with them to filter some of the ash-filled air. The mission was soon announced: search and rescue in the Flintlock Fumaroles.

Terrence stepped forward while his fellow trainees balked.

He realized that life in the criminal element had taught him how to lead. Unlike the worst of his former employers, Terrence stayed reasonable and communicated his expectations of his team thoroughly. The Ashfall Waste’s flora was different but provided some respite for the dragons under his command. His unit flourished, and he rose through the ranks to become Captain. Eventually his sister was brought to his unit.

His superiors planned to dishonorably discharge her and send her back home. The accusations were dire. Going AWOL was one issue – but an associated charge of egg-napping was quite another. Gladekeeper only knew what their father would do to her if he took the accusations at face value. Terrence watched his sister cradle a pair of strange eggs protectively in her arms, looking up at her to see the recognition in her eyes.

It was an ambush. An egg vanished in the ensuing battle, and Terrence narrowly caught the second in the nick of time. His sister got caught up in a jet of flame spouting from the ground. While the battle was short lived, the company was destroyed. He asked the two remaining members of the company to be discharged and made his way back to the Shrieking Wilds. His former contacts would know the location of one of the better-known employers working out of the Plaguelands – one who had an eye for the unusual.

On his way he met Nabu, who quickly identified the egg. Terrence decided to forgo setting foot back in the old criminal hideaway and go find the old employer himself. There, he would find a clan that would take a retired Major and accept him as their own.

The egg would be the first member of this new family.
