The board was set. Rocks lay strewn across what looked like a checkerboard, all dyed different colors and in a seemingly random arrangement. Setral and Culsu watched him closely. Kodama felt his heart pound in his chest, but kept a level expression. His tail curled nervously around his feet, and finally, he moved a piece forward. Then another. And other. Setral's eyes followed the movements of the rocks, but Culsu stared sharply at Kodama, monitoring his expression. At last, he was finished. He rolled his weight onto his hind legs and sat contentedly. There was a pause.
"Well?" he said at last. "How did I do?"
"Brilliant," Setral beamed.
"Terrible," Culsu hissed. Both Setral and Kodama looked at her curiously.
"Culsu, he lost one life total, and got almost twice the required score," Setral muttered to her. "He really did quite well." But Culsu simply flicked her nose in the opposite direction, pointedly glaring the other way. Her primary strategist shrunk back from the obvious disapproval. Kodama sat, watching her with a frozen expression. He could feel himself begin to shake nervously.
"Kodama," she said at last, "do you know what you did wrong?"
"I-I," he stuttered, "I didn't get the most treasure I could have collected from the battle. From a strategic standpoint, I was too caught up in clever maneuvers and methods Setral taught me to reach the victory's full potential." Culsu's upper lip curled ever-so slightly upwards in a menacing half-smile.
"That was a good criticism of your work, but no." She pushed a few rocks back into place using her claws, and spoke without looking up from them. "The problem with the result of the battle is that you were unable to see it as an actual situation. You focused on your score, but saw it as our approval, not as the treasure it was meant to simulate. You saw the rocks as the most crucial playing piece, but not as the living creatures around you. Most of all, you were nervous. Hesitating. If you're too afraid to disappoint us, two people aiming to help you, how will you fare on the battlefield?" She moved the rocks forward as she spoke.
"It was just a simulation, I'm sure he'll do differently in an actual battle--"
"I know that, Setral. He'll most certainly behave differently," Culsu said curtly. "He'll freeze up. Now, Kodama. Watch." She moved the pieces forward, taking a different path than he had. Kodama added the points she picked up in his head and, at the end, looked at her curiously.
"You got less points than me," he said.
"I know."
"Then how was it better?"
"I didn't lose anyone," she said, gesturing down at the checkerboard. Kodama felt a rare spark of anger.
"I only lost one dragon," he began, "and I earned almost twice the amount of treasure! If I had done what you did, you would have criticized me for not getting enough points!"
"Calm down, Kodama," Setral warned.
"I'm sorry, but this is just... this is unreasonable!"
Culsu frowned at him and pushed one of the playing pieces forward. "This is the one you sacrificed for treasure," she said. "Obviously, you don't care about it. Now imagine it as one of your clanmates. Let's say it's Bilangozi." Setral stopped at looked at her squarely. She smirked. "You understand now. We can't even lose one. The most precious thing in this game is those fighting on your side. Do you understand?"
Kodama nodded once, then said hoarsely, "Yes. I understand." Culsu smiled at him.
"Good. Then you're learning. That's enough for today, Setral," she said as she turned to leave. "Let's give the boy some rest."
Setral tipped his head sympathetically. "You did well, Kodama. You're going to make a wonderful strategist."
Once they left his den, he dropped to the floor, exhausted. Someday, he thought to himself. Someday.
