White Baneberry (Doll's Eyes)

Bane was raised by his mother, a wandering mage who travelled across the continent trading spells for food, supplies, and places for her and her son to sleep. She trained him in magic from a young age after she discovered he had inherited her mana affinity and passion for spellwork. He soon surpassed her, finding that his natural ability was superior to hers. She supported him throughout his childhood until he was able to settle in the Weald territory permanently to develop new forms of experimental magic. He is able to support himself by selling spells, potions, and formulas at the market on the edge of the forest.

He held the golem gently, cradling it as if it were his own child. In a way it was. He had been the one to awaken it from centuries of slumber, coaxing it back to life with ancient magic. It had been slow and clumsy at first as the creature learned to live again. It struggled to move properly and found that its voice was lost. But it soon adjusted to its new life. However it couldn't help but notice something was different. Everything was dark. The golem's memories were faint and cracked by its centuries of sleep but it could remember the light. It could remember seeing. And now there was nothing. It's new master had worked tirelessly to restore its eyes. But the long forgotten magic was incomplete and he soon reached the limit of his abilities. He carried or led the golem with him wherever he went, allowing it to experience as many sounds, scents, and sensations as possible. But the golem was curiously quiet, consistently nonreactive, and seemed to simply exist, uninterested in the new life it had been granted.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. Though awkward, the golem was greedily absorbing all of these new experiences, cataloging them carefully away in its muddled memory. It was still and placid only because it feared going off on its own with no one to serve as its guide. It bonded with its new master, tucking its head under the dragon's chin when they slept together and spending hours on his lap as he worked. As the months passed they continued to grow closer until they were inseparable. The golem's personality began to show despite it's anxiety. It played around its master's feet, begged for attention when he was busy working on spells and formulas, and gleefully knocked over anything it could reach. The two were the closest of companions.

But the golem could sense its master was troubled, trying to find a solution that would restore its eyes. It had no way to tell its master that it didn't need its sight as long as they were together. Even as its voice began to return it could not communicate with him. He heard his master muttering in the dark about the need for living eyes. Sacrifices. Pain. And it could only reach out a paw and offer a small amount of comfort. But then one day everything changed.

The golem had been sleeping in front of the fire in its master's workshop on its favorite pillow. It did not dream but slept deeply while its master drew sigils on huge pieces of parchment on his work table. The gentle sound of the paper being shuffled was comforting and familiar. The hum of magical instruments and scratching of a pen were like a lullaby. But out of the dull murmur of mundane sounds came a sudden gasp. It was enough to rouse the golem from its sleep. Its master was breathing hard, groaning softly as if in pain. The golem leapt to its feet and rushed to its master's side, nearly colliding with a table leg the in the process. It placed its paws on its masters feet and meowed plaintively. To its surprise, its master let out a soft laugh and leaned down to pick the golem up. But it could still sense his distress.

"I'm sorry," its master said softly.

But before the golem could react, its master placed in on the table in front of him and the golem could feel the gentle warmth of magic filling the air around it. Then came the pain. In the center of its forehead blossomed pain like the golem had never felt. It had never truly experienced pain, as its flesh was made of the rock that bore it. But this was the agony of an organic creature. It cried out and a strangled sob came from the throat of its master who stood by desperately, wishing to intervene. But he couldn't. Through the haze of pain the golem could feel itself levitate from the table and float in the air above, but it didn't have the strength to struggle. The throbbing in its head was getting worse. It was unbearable, like fire was engulfing its entire body. It felt itself beginning to lose consciousness and once more it longed to be held by its master. But no comfort came. At last it went limp and sank to the table where it lay unmoving.

It's master rushed forward, pulling the golem frantically into his arms, looking for signs of life. But there was none. He dragged himself to the chair in front of the fire and collapsed into it, cradling the golem and weeping bitterly. The magic must have failed. And he had paid the ultimate price, the loss of his most beloved companion. He leaned forward, trying to keep the sobs from wracking his body. It was futile. His devastation was immense. But as he tried to quiet himself, the golem in his arms began to react. He froze, watching for any sign of movement. An ear flicked, a paw twitched, and all of the sudden, the golem relaxed and began to awaken. Relief flooded through its master as he held the golem even tighter, hoping beyond hope that at least no damage had been done. Then to his amazement the golem sat up and opened its eyes, peering up at him with confusion. But its eyes were focused. He smiled down at the creature, reaching up to adjust the veil over his face.

"It's me, darling," its master whispered.

The golem lit up, its eyes wide and blinking as it began furiously rubbing its face against his. Its delight and excitement made the months of research and sacrifice worth it. Even the horror of the last few minutes were quickly forgotten. He had done it. He had restored the golem's eyes and its sight. It was like a miracle.

The golem leaped to the floor, spinning in excited circles as it tried to look at everything at once. Its sight was back. It looked into the fire, at the tapestries on the walls, at the magical devices covering every surface. And finally it looked back to its master. The dragon was wide and imposing with scales of earth brown and pearl white. His wings were small but muscular, and his face was kind. But the most surprising attribute, one the golem had not previously known, was that his master had a row of emerald green eyes running down both sides of his body. They were all directed towards him, observing the golem closely as it studied him. But it didn't occur to the golem to be afraid of these eyes. They were all looking at it with fondness. The golem jumped up onto his master's lap and snuggled affectionately against him and his master gave a sigh of relief. But the golem couldn't help but notice that part of his master's face was hidden by a veil. It covered only the eyes and the golem could not help but wonder what could be hidden underneath. It tried to peek but beneath the veil were clean white bandages and nothing else. It lost interest, entertained by the movement of its master's many other eyes.

They gazed at the happy golem and a familiar pair of eyes looked back at them. The golem's eyes were emerald green.
