Biography
Deltaeo
Pronounced "del-TEE-oh"
Marshland Sentry
Named for Whatcheeria deltae
“town of What Cheer” + “town of Delta”
❀ Species Profile ❀
Extinct Whatcheeria deltae was a six-foot long apex predator living 340 million years ago in at tropical lowland lake that covered what is not eastern Iowa. An early tetrapod (four-legged animal), Whatcheeria lived during a time when fishes were making the transition to land. Although it had legs, this ambush predator seems to have been primarily aquatic, and would have been slow and awkward on land. There is no modern animal quite comparable to the long-lost predator, he adds, but its hunting behavior might have been similar to that of an alligator snapping turtle, walking along the bottom of their aquatic habitat rather than swimming.
Fun Fact: Fossil remains suggest that this predator had unusually rapid growth as a juvenile, more like human growth than the slower, more consistent growth pattern of modern-day reptiles. Scientists have long thought that rapid growth spurts occurred only in the most advanced tetrapod lineages, animals that had evolved the most specialized traits: birds, their dinosaur ancestors, and mammals.
❀ Biography ❀
It's not entirely certain when Deltaeo arrived in Owl Wood, but Baurusa first befriended him, in January, 2024, when she found some unusual, large footprints and tracked him to where he'd been lounging at the bottom of a wetland, invisible to all but the most experienced of ambush predators. He spends the vast majority of his time in the freshwater swamps and marshes of the Worldedge Wetlands, where he's taken to making sure that all is in order, and there are no threats to the safety of the clan.

They are dragons that disguise themselves in lakes and ponds, striking at their prey out of seemingly nowhere. Their manes can pass for grasses and they often let algae, waterplants, mosses, ferns etc grow on their scales.
Kelpies usually just, if they feel the need to, glide as water tends to soak into their feathers and manes making proper flight hard, unless they let their wings and mane dry completely.
Selected dragons of the right size, coloring and patience with hatchlings (usually imperials or guardians), even lie down in dips of the land, doubling as an entire pond or lake, and sometimes you could only tell these 'ponds' apart from dragons by touching.
Those dragons usually are the ones assigned to disguise and protect groups of nests and hatchlings while smaller adults take care of them, but are also known to use this tactic for hunting if pressed for food.
You will occasionally see confused ducks or geese sitting on these dragons!
