Goblin, quite literally, fell out of the sky onto Mossgarde. It is understood that she hatched somewhere in the Shifting Expanse, but that's as much information as anyone knows. Goblin claims to remember something about trying to get up high to see the stars, and seems to recall she was not alone, but does not know who she was with or what they were using to get up there - except for suddenly not being in the sky anymore and then landing in some kind of cushioned moss. Whilst a search was conducted to return Goblin to her parents, it proved to be largely fruitless and Goblin decided she wanted to remain in Mossgarde anyway. Despite the fact she had already chomped her way through some books, her request was granted; her eccentricity and mischievous behaviour apparently make her quite charming. That said, when she is with Cadet, she can be a menace and quite the troublemaker. It's not certain which of them is the worst for it when the pair are together, but someone usually ends up getting annoyed.

Goblin was a very curious and inquisitive hatchling, and that desire only increased as she grew, and the home she had accidentally found seemed to be perfect to learn all she could about the world. Naturally, she gravitated to wanting to work in the library. However, considering her interest in directly absorbing the material through consuming it, Hyacinth did not want her working there. However, he recognised her drive and passion to learn, for he himself had been the same before he found the library, so a compromise was stuck - Goblin would serve as a scribe. Her function is to go out with Mossgarde's scholars on fieldtrips and make notes and record as an assistant for them. Who she assists varies, but she's considered a very useful and proficient scribe, as she's interested in almost everyone's work and thus pays attention to all the details of what is going on and records that alongside what she's told to write down. She takes it very seriously, and it focuses her in a way that almost controls her mischievous impulses. It's an ideal job for her, and after she had proven she can be trusted, she's allowed back in the library during her downtime. Sometimes, even the bookmaker crafts a second copy of a tome just so Goblin can eat it. It follows that Goblin is very well behaved under the bookmaker's watchful eye.
