The worm operates by encrypting the data of infected systems and demanding ransom payments of $300-$600 in cryptocurrency in exchange for data decryption. It spreads between vulnerable machines via an exploit by the name of EternalBlue. While this exploit is already patched out on up-to-date systems, some organizations opted not to apply the update or are using unsupported versions of Windows, leaving their machines vulnerable to the attack. 05/12/2017 (15:03 UTC): Mere hours after the attack begins, a cybersecurity professional discovers a kill-switch which prevents systems that are already infected from being encrypted or spreading the worm to any new machines. While the worm isn't fully contained, the discovery of the kill-switch severely slows the spread of the initial infection. 05/14/2017 (?? UTC): The first variant of WannaCry 1.0 appears with a new kill-switch which is found and registered by another cybersecurity professional hours later. 05/14/2017 (?? UTC): Rumors of WannaCry 2.0━a version without a kill-switch━begin circulating, which are later confirmed. This modified version is fortunately corrupted and non-functional. It is believed to have been made by someone other than the creator of WannaCry 1.0. 05/15/2017 (?? UTC): A second variant of the original worm appears with yet another kill-switch, which is found and registered by a group of threat intelligence analysts. 05/19/2017 (?? UTC): A free tool━dubbed WannaKey━is developed to decrypt infected Windows XP systems. 05/19/2017 (?? UTC): A second free tool━known as Wanakiwi━that works for infected systems running other versions of Windows is developed and released. 06/14/2017 (?? UTC): The worm is considered fully contained after infecting up to 300,000 machines. Total damages are unknown, but are estimated to reach up to $4,000,000,000 despite the relatively short duration of the attack. An estimated $130,000 in ransom payments have been made to date. 08/03/2018 (?? UTC): A new variant of WannaCry infects 10,000 machines belonging to a chip fabrication factory, forcing a halt in production lasting two days and costing roughly $250 million in damages.
