REPTILIA the familiar researcher I love the beasts for the reasons others hate- The orchestra of teeth singing into flesh, the clicking of gentle antenna caresses, the family embraced in the walls of my den- I love you, I sigh. How could I help but to love you? poem by Dandelionqueen |
About Crocodiles
snappy lil dinosaur descendants
|
Crocodiles are large semiaquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. The term crocodile is sometimes used even more loosely to include all extant members of the order Crocodilia, which includes the alligators and caimans. Several crocodile species are listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) such as Philippine crocodile, Orinoco crocodile and the West African Slender-snouted crocodile. |
Fun Facts
» Although they have a strong chomp, some crocodiles very gently carry their tiny hatchlings in their mouth to get them to safety. Some species have too narrow snouts for this however and will instead carry the babies on their backs. » Crocodiles (along with some other animals such as geckos and manatees) are polyphyodonts meaning their teeth are constantly replaced! Scientists have been researching how knowledge of this process could potentially be applied to help human teeth. |

About Tortoises
shelly friends
|
Tortoises are land dwelling reptiles in the same order as turtles (Testudines), characterised by a shell covering the centre of their body that they can retract into to protect from predators. American English refers to them also as turtles while British English refers to aquatic dwelling Testudines as turtles and land dwelling ones as tortoises. Therefore, either term is correct but typically tortoise is used to only refer to a land dwelling, shelled creature. |
Fun Facts
» Galápagos giant tortoises enjoy neck scritches! In the wild, Galápagos finches will fly to the giant tortoises and they will stretch out their neck for the lil finches, who will pick off bugs which helps them with any itches and to get rid of any parasites. When humans give them neck scritches they will also stretch out their necks and display signs of being relaxed and content. » Tortoises can live for a really long time! The estimated average lifespan is 80 to 150 years with some living even longer. Their low metabolism is one of the big reasons for their longevity and in contrast warm-blooded animals with high metabolisms like mammals (which they rely on for generating heat) don't live as long. |
