Gabriel was born in the Sunbeam Ruins already lonely. With no siblings, the young spiral hatchling attached himself with fervor to any work that other dragons in his clan were willing to give him. He considers stumbling into smithing work the best thing that has ever happened to him--it gave him something with which to occupy his time, and satisfied him like nothing else could. While he knows well how to create basic weapons and armor, his true love is for jewelry, though this is a talent which he is rarely able to exercise.
When he was still a young adult, he fell deeply in love with a fairy-like fae to whom he devoted all his heart. She was a flighty creature, however, and after a few seasons together she left him to care for their two children alone. Despairing, Gairell fell into a deep depression. Other dragons in his small clan took pity on him and reared the children themselves, recommending Gairell to travel for a time. He found the Fletching Clan, at the time outgrowing itself every day in riches, more than happy to take in a skilled jeweler. A year later, however, Gairell received word that his clan had been stricken with plague and most were dead, including his two children. At the same time, the Fletching Clan was caught up in civil war, and Gairell was forced to abandon his jewelry to make weapons and armor. He hasn't been quite the same since.
Gairell is horribly afraid of hurting others and worries that he will never be worthy of love again after the tragedy of his youth. After the Fae Calamity, he was picked up by an extravagant wildclaw named Haktiir. It became clear, however, that Haktiir was only using Gairell for the money he saved--after all, smithing is lucrative business, but Gairell never feels that he has anything to spend it on. Haktiir was sent away from the clan after he was caught stealing from the vaults, and since then Gairell has become an extremely quiet soul. He rarely appears at clan gatherings, does his work without complaint, and returns to his rooms alone.
He doesn't notice the longing eyes of his most frequent customer, the general Eleinus, of course.
