Melkam's mother stumbled upon the village Melkam would eventually call home, the last bastion of safety before she passed after giving birth. A small community has prided itself on being honest folk, she was adopted by the village physician and his partner - though it was a tragedy that Melkam's own mother hadn't survived to see her take her first breaths, she would be loved by the two of them in her stead.
The ashen skinned infant was a blessing and ultimately a curse. Growing up, Melkam's impulsive nature quickly revealed itself left her adoptive parents often despairing at her actions, her manner seemingly flipping on a dime in a way that was almost whimsical, slipping between kindness and cruelty without missing a beat. This is, in part, due to her heritage - born from an unholy and cursed union between the living and the undead - and a general flippant attitude towards the value of life itself. Melkam was, in every sense, an extremely childish girl. Giggly and gleeful; viciously mean and unempathetic. She remains pointedly immature and beholden to little more than her own interests, a facet not helped by her scurrying away from her village after declaring her life 'boring', abandoning the men who'd raised her and disappearing into the wilds with little thought how her disappearance would affect her home. Melkam wouldn't be especially hurt to learn that her absence brought equal parts misery and relief, though she would certainly relish in making a significant display of feeling unloved to watch people squirm. Melkam took to the wilds reasonably well, slipping into natural, if unpolished, instincts for feeding and fending for herself. She continued the cycle of adopting the motherless with her wolf, a pup abandoned in the rains and drawn to Melkam's supernatural blood, and this bond with her animal companion is the closest thing she has ever experienced to a genuine connection. Melkam genuinely cares more about the wolf than she does her fellow man and would gladly sell anyone up a river without a paddle if it made Kayo's life slightly more comfortable. As a young adult, Melkam's travels sometimes take her back to civilization. Though not strictly a bounty hunter, she'll take up contracts to find criminals or search for missing people. She's far too self-absorbed to truly care about what she's doing, but she is very concerned with doing things she finds 'fun' - stalking human prey definitely falls under that category, although she absolutely does not offer any introspective onto why that might be and doesn't care to think about it further. She likes doing it and that's enough. |
