Biography

WHISPER
"still there is a sorrow / with us in the room"
The Family, Mary Oliver

Whisper has gone a slightly different route from his family.

His siblings always called him gloomy and quiet, but he just prefers to chat with... better company. It started when he devoured a very, very old book. The dust made him sneeze, and then he had that tingling sense in his head that he could find who wrote it, and he looked up to see the slightly bemused ghost - of the author of the book, who had passed away decades ago.

Whisper always found it easier to make friends with ghosts. He grew up being told he was mature for his age, struggling to connect with his more carefree and outgoing family or other children. It was easier by far to deal with the ghost of a long-dead author than to handle the exuberance of his family and other hatchlings, though sometimes the ghosts were more upset to find him taking a nibble of their work than excited to be summoned.

When he was old enough, Whisper set out in to the world to find his place. He always imagined it would be surrounded by old books and ghosts, and so that was what he tried to find. Eventually, his search led him to the library of Kel Asari, which was renowned to be one of the biggest and most impressive libraries outside of the Sunbeam Ruins. However, he was found tearing off the pages of some of the library's older books rather quickly, and was quietly asked to leave. Embarrassed to find that not everyone knew of his family and allowed their habits, Whisper would have left Kel Asari then and there if not for one peculiar Tundra.

Aurumbra had noticed Whisper's antics in the library, and had followed him to sate her curiosity. Whisper expected her not to believe him, as the librarians had, but she seemed surprisingly open to the concept. Even more surprising, she was a collector of old and rare books herself, and offered pieces of their pages if Whisper would speak to ghosts for her. This was everything Whisper could have asked for - someone expressing interest in his ghosts and allowing him to eat their books!

He met Aurumbra at her mansion the next day. The meeting itself was a bit awkward - he hadn't really performed for someone like this before, and was bad at making small talk - but if the Tundra noticed she didn't seem to care. As soon as it was socially acceptable, an old tome was presented to Whisper and so began their seance.

The ghost Aurumbra had him summon was an old friend of hers. They talked through Whisper at length, and even involved Whisper himself in the conversation some. It was exhilarating. Whisper finally felt as though he was around dragons who truly understood him.

At the end of their seance, Aurumbra gave him a few books to read or taste if he wanted, under the condition that he bring them back next week. She even paid him for their visit, and quite well at that. That night, reading old horror novels and chatting with new ghosts about their work, Whisper decided he would stay in Kel Asari.

He's been in the clan for several months now, and has learned more than he ever hoped. He has also grown closer to Aurumbra, and developed a sort of friendship with her after many seances. He even stops by the visit when there are no seances to be had, simply to talk and provide the older Tundra company. He views her almost like his grandmother, and is happy to provide her the company of living dragons every now and then as much as the dead. He even returned to the library and was able to convince the head librarian of his abilities, and though they're friends now, he's still not allowed to eat library books. Whisper is happy in Kel Asari, and is managing to make living friends for the first time in his life.

However, he's starting to think he really messed up.

After a while, Aurumbra gave Whisper free reign of all the books in her collection after their seances. At first he was overjoyed, but now it's been some time since he's taken advantage of that privilege. The last book he ate from was unlike the others, hidden in a dusty corner and thoroughly forgotten. The ghost it summoned was unlike the others, taking one look around the place and falling into a screaming fit. When Whisper was able to calm it down, the ghost explained that Aurumbra was its wife - many dragons' wife, actually - and had murdered them all.

Whisper doesn't know what to make of it. He's tried to ignore it, forget, but the ghost pesters him for revenge constantly. Whisper doesn't know what to believe; on the one hand, Aurumbra has never been anything but kind to him - or anybody, as far as Whisper can tell - but the spirit speaks with conviction. He doesn't know how to determine the validity of its claims, and doesn't want to, for that matter. He'd much rather put his head down and forget, though the ghost does its best to make that hard. Whisper hasn't gotten a full night's sleep since he summoned it.

To make matters worse, the owner of the bakery he started to work at is onto him. Whisper's certain of it, though he can't be sure how; Iodocus has certainly noticed his recent exhaustion, but nothing Whisper says seems to satisfy him. Since the baker noticed, Whisper could swear his family started to come around the bakery more and more. They always try to start conversation with Whisper, and while they're nice enough, he can't help but feel like a pinned bug under a microscope. He doesn't want to tell these dragons about his abilities - at this point, he'd much rather forget he has them at all - and something about their persistence sits wrong with him. He doesn't know why they care so much, and he doesn't want to know. He just wants to get some sleep, at this point.

Bracken and Mandragora’s little ones have a knack of being able to sense where their loved ones are and how they’re doing - as long as they’ve eaten something they’ve written (or taken a bite out of that dragon!).
