Biography
Scathallach
The Lamplighter
For thousands of years, dragons on Sornieth have built their legacy with magic.
Whether it is the light of the sunbeam ruins or the fires that power the forges of the Ashfall Wastes, or the ice that imprisons the horrors of the Southern Icefield or the wind currents that takes dragons far away, it is an undeniable fact that it is magic that is at the heart of all draconic society.
And yet, thousands of years ago, in another age, another civilisation became masters of the world. But it was not magic that drove them to such heights, but technology, science and industry.
For Scathallach, who had not a single ounce of magical talent, this one sole fact was what gave him strength.
Born without the ability to wield magic, Scathallach was ostracised and ridiculed by fellow dragons. With only his wit and intelligence, he was forced to rely on non-magical means to get by. But as if to offset his weakness, he was gifted with a talent for knowledge, combined with an unending optimism. When he read about the past civilisations of the Second Age, he was inspired to follow in their footsteps. He wanted to unearth the secrets that the ancient civilisations had unlocked. He felt it was his calling. As if his path in life had always been destined to become a master of the ancient arts of science.
He started experimenting from a young age. Soon, he had replicated many tools that had been documented by the ancient civilisation. Tools that had long since been made obsolete by the ubiquitousness of magic, but it was his, and his alone. He made wheels and vehicles, farming tools, furnaces and smithery tools. He made glass, and fishing nets, fans and manacles, gaseous liquids and flammable liquids.
And when he found oil, he made lamps.
For some reason, it was his lamps that started gaining the attention of his fellow dragons. By this point, Scathallach had moved into the shadows of the Tangled Flight, far from his home of the Viridian Labyrinth. The dragons of the Shadow Flight has not known much light in their life. The sun does not shine fully in their realm, and the moon glows eerily in the night. And furthermore, the light of the Lightweaver is not very welcome in their lands.
Perhaps it was this rejection of ordinary light that paved the way for Scathallach's success. His lamps did not offend the local populace, and the way they glowed pleased the gloom. Soon, they began to spread through the woods.
For the first time since the dawn of dragons, the Tangled Woods knew light.
His home became known as the Lamplighter's Bastion, and he became renowned as the dragon who brought light to the darkness.
However, it was a very eerie light. And around the same time, legends of an odd flickering lamp that would steal your soul began to circulate throughout the region....
