Biography

Handler of the wishlists of others, Overture is a water spirit who has taken on the form of a dragon upon venturing out of the body of water he once resided in. He is mute, and selectively so. Communicating via sign language has always been much easier for him, which is why he has chosen not to speak. There's also the possibility that he may accidentally enrapture dragons with his voice if he ever were to use it, and such things remind him of the unfortunate past he once had. Instead of snatching away dragons into the depths of his lake, he now provides them with gifts, and serves as the ambassador to other clans across Sornieth.

Story

The power to control a dragon merely with the sound of one's voice was something only reserved to the likes of Veilspun, or perhaps sorcerers and other magic wielders.

Overture was no such dragon.

In fact, he was nothing like the fabled Veilspun at all. While he shared their distinctive long manes, he himself was a Wildclaw, his species known for their merit in combat and the honor that came with it. Yet, he found himself not so enticed by the idea of moving up in the ranks of any sort of clan. In fact, he'd rather avoid all of dragonkind if it was at all possible, even though he knew it wasn't. Over the course of a mere few days after his hatching, he felt that he was fundamentally different from the rest of his nestmates. His voice had an almost wispy quality to it, as if a strong enough sea breeze could blow it away from him forever, and the way that his parents seemed to dote on him more was getting to the point of being unsettling.

His siblings, of course, despised him for his tendency to always get what he wanted with no problems at all, when they had to work for what they desired. It was only when he was gifted an enchanted orca necklace on one of his birthdays that his siblings finally had enough. They led him to a seaside cave at low tide, knowing that if they urged him deep inside it, he wouldn't have enough time to get out before the waters rose during high tide and flooded the cave.

After venturing for some time, he eventually realized that he was alone in the cave, having been abandoned long ago when he didn't notice. Overture also knew that the tides would be changing in a few minutes, as he'd always had this strange connection to water that was stronger than the rest of his family. It didn't help that he had thought to memorize the times when the ocean shifted in order to maximize the catches he brought in when fishing.

Immediately after realizing that he was most likely stuck in a terrible situation, he rushed to scramble out of there, his usually swift feet being rendered clumsy in the loose rocks of the cavern. He struggled to get a good foothold on the damp stone, and his claws scraped across and dislodged pebbles of all shapes and sizes. He knew his frantic attempt at escaping was futile, but still pushed forward, his short breaths and the tumbling of stones being the only sounds that echoed in the cramped, hollow area. A few times, Overture tripped, the ground beneath him being unforgiving as it sliced him open. Bruised and battered, he reached a point where he could see the light at the end of the tunnel. While he was still splayed out across the rocks, he outstretched his talons in vain as if to silently ask for some sort of help.

Nobody came.

All that he saw after that was the waves rushing in, the salty water quickly running over his scales and enveloping his body. The wounds he had sustained earlier were still fresh, and stung greatly as the ocean made its wrath known.
