Biography

Tephra, the Mad
tumblr_ofx9zsro1B1uc01tdo2_1280.png

The Two-Headed Dragon

Whispering Brood
Not long after Tephra started work in field research, he became a target of the interests of Amanita, a strange dragon kept captive in Sahko's laboratory. Some think this and the events surrounding the two fae he nested are what has caused Tephra to try and stay away from the lair as much as he could. Though this ignores mostly that Tephra started fieldwork before, not after, the incident with Amanita.

The incident rather quickly ate away at his standing with the clan due to rumors surrounding the event. The highest ranking officials of the clan know better, having access to more details of the incident. His relationship with Arenna became strained as well. There was also always a lingering madness in his eyes after that... an agitation or fear in the way he carried himself and turns his head sharply at sudden movement or sound beyond the range of his sight...

Ruin
He was still Tephra, even after, that. At least for awhile. None knew quite how far his madness went, until his return from a particular expedition. Ruins found deep beneath the earth, under layers and layers ancient plague-growth, whose denizens were all long dead. Tephra was the only dragon who did not join those stilled remains in that silent place.

What might have occurred is unknown, though there are plenty of theories. Some terrible forgotten traps, arcane curses, or forgotten horrors may have claimed the expedition. Tephra escaping only barely, and at the cost of the last few shreds of his sanity. Or perhaps it was Tephra who killed them, the whole thing a trap of his design to sacrifice his peers to some unknown and profane entity.
"What a frightful thing, to watch a friend fall beyond reach."
- Makhae, The Stone of Many

Scholar?
Mate: Amanita

The tattered skydancer dragged himself back to the outpost clutching the skull of some unidentified avian. As soon as he was approached he started screaming for help and made to run towards outpost before collapsing.

Tephra himself is unable to communicate what happened in the ruins, though not for lack of trying. It was while making an attempt to explain himself that he was overcome by frustration and pulled all the skin from his face. It came free smoothly and bloodlessly but doing so released over him a cloud of unpleasant, sticky, black gas.

The Lookout
The skull Tephra brought back with him is a curious thing. He refers to it as "the Lookout" and does not allow it to be removed from his presence. He occasionally uses it as a mouthpiece, speaking for it on various matters, though rarely things of any importance. "The Lookout sees you, today. It thinks you look lovely."

He does this far more often than he speaks for himself, and when speaking for the Lookout, he tends to be slightly more coherent than he does otherwise.

The little skull ornament he wears he'll sometimes call "little lookout" but "little lookout" doesn't speak. It was a gift to him from Arenna. She continues to care for him when she is able, and most of the adornments he wears are her doing. She also likes to bring him birdskulls, since he seems to find them comforting, and he has quite the collection of them in his chambers. Any room Tephra frequents is decorated by a great number of the things. You can tell which ones he has put in place by the tarry stickiness on them.
Scholar
Tephra's madness does not keep him from his scholarly pursuits. It only hinders in his ability to communicate any progress he makes in them. He is a common sight in the Library of Scarwind Keep. Sometimes he is also seen in the House of Lore below the Bonestrewn Crest, walking among the shelves which he used to keep and manage for the clan.

Librarian
Mate: Arenna

Devoted Student
Tephra became a student of Peryite's during the exile of the clan. Not long after Peryite's return, Tephra departed his birth clan to join Peryite in Minstri's.

Tephra is not much like his teacher. He is far more sociable and open, although he is often awkward and poor with social cues. He holds Peryite in the highest regard and takes great pains to stay in the elder skydancer's favor. It is no easy task. Tephra's duties are maintaining the records of the Clan so that Peryite can effectively advise and serve Minstri.

Sacred Texts
Asking anyone in the clan will have you know that Tephra is dedicated completely to his books and records. He is not the most imposing of dragons under normal circumstances (quite the opposite really), but he can be as terrifying as Grabal if he suspects you have done harm to anything in his domain of words and pages. They say he keeps among the shelves and boxes a crate that will eat dragons whole if they mistreat the materials in the library, but no one seems to know if that is true or not.

Whirlwind Love
But his dedication to his work is not absolute. For he loves too dearly his mate Arenna the Gale for that to be true. As he works almost ceaselessly, it is Arenna who comes to visit him in the library when she has a break from her guard duties.
Path of the Studious
Tephra recently set aside his duties as Librarian to focus more heavily on research and field work, acquiring new knowledge for the clan. Little is yet known about the enigmatic guardian he has entrusted his precious scrolls to, only that she is no more lax about conduct in the library than he was.
