Sometimes, family has nothing to do with blood. In fact, some of the best family is one obtained through adversity or even chance. And those types of families can be stronger than those related by blood. That was exactly the lesson Yirquzi learned the hard way. After another helped to open his eyes.
Not only were his broodmates prejudice against his coloration--which was vastly different than their own neutral tones--they constantly ridiculed his behavior and what he thought. It led him to shutting down, being quiet, even letting himself become dusty and covered in grime in attempt to blend in. Of course, it hardly helped any, but he could think of nothing else to do. One chance encounter opened his eyes. A female dragon raised a commotion with their group when she disagreed with their elders. Although he had not seen her before, her coloration was almost a mirror of his own! It was the first time he had ever realized that he was not the odd one. It shook his perception and allowed all the things he had been keeping buried to burst free. Against the stern orders of his broodmates, he cast them aside to follow the now-outcast older Sandsurge. She did not discourage him from being who he was. Eventually, he too realized his thoughts were mirroring the songs she often sang when her mind drifted. Unofficially adopting her as his elder sister, he stuck by her side as they followed the mysterious siren's song to an ancient ruin... |

"Glory is merely a trap set by those who seek to distract one from their duty, blinding ignorant with arrogance so they fail to see what needs be done."
The barren land. A ruin housing a nexus of elements: Shadow, Ice, Wind, Lightning, Earth, Plague and Arcane. But with an absence of Fire, Nature, Water, and Light, a small imbalance allowed for something else to form. A passage the normal eye could not see. The fragile veil thinly stretched between Sornieth and something Else. It existed somehow shapeless, a shadow caught between.
In this place, a handful of Ancient Dragons following a Path unimagined by others gathered. They explored, experimented, constructed. Guided by the unknown, they banded together to prepare a foundation of defense. Quiet, secret, isolated. They sought to attempt to strengthen the fragile barrier only to have it rip open when ignorant dragons interfered in their work. |
An unrecorded war was waged with creatures and things that pushed through the breach. Eventually, after many losses, the Ancient Dragons managed to push the invasion back and seal the tear with the help of modern dragons serving the Arcanist. Only the Sandsurge remain of the Ancients who defended the ruin. They allied with the Arcanists to construct what would later be called The Forbidden Portal.
Once complete, the Ancients faded into the darkness shrouding the barren land, returning to labyrinths deep beneath the surface. Where the Void Wardens are the Eyes that See, a smaller subgroup also survived. They lacked the Sight of the primary group. Instead, they were the Ears that Listen. They prowl close to the surface to listen to the unheard song carried upon the Wind, hear the vibrations of the melody passing through the Earth. They are the Fringe Wardens.
Unbeknownst to the denizens of Sornieth who come to the ruins to test their worth by fighting the handful of creatures that manage to pass through the portal, the Wardens observe. They ensure the numbers of invaders stay in check, that they are driven to their deaths in battle against ignorant young dragons. Theirs is a secluded vigil, unheralded and unknown.
