Fragment has known, since his wings were still drying from the egg, that he has a Purpose. What that purpose is has changed many times - to learn the secrets of how water in a fountain goes up without Water magic, to disassemble (and then put back together) the clockwork toy he found, to dig as big a hole as he could in the dry loose dirt outside his mom's den until he hit stone - but he still knows deep in the bright hot core of himself that he has one, and each previous purpose doesn't make the current one any less vital to fulfill. Fragment is pretty sure he won't die without the attention of other dragons - if he fed on attention, he probably wouldn't also need to feed on normal dragon food, and he's finished a project only to become suddenly aware of his growling stomach and shaking wings enough times to be certain that he does - and he's resolved himself to having to deal with the consequences he does have. He's not shy the same way his grandfather is, he's not afraid of other dragons, he doesn't even dislike other dragons all that much - it's just, they're always getting in his way! Fragment has a Purpose. If other dragons liking him means they'll keep interrupting his work and messing him up, then he'll just have to do without.

Those that he ends up with eventually, deep in the caverns of a lair alongside the Driftwood Drag, are familiar with changing. They're only surprised for a moment when they learn that he hasn't stopped - then it's an asset, the way his strong digging claws can become careful fingers for delicate work, how he can unfold his fans back into wings if he needs them and can squeeze into the slenderest of the deep tunnels without fear.
Those he chose to live with are not known, within their own clan, for friendliness. They stay within their cavern, unwelcoming of visitors from the dens above, and spare no words among themselves for idle conversation or polite checking up. Still, when he reaches out for a tool that's thrust into his claws without a pause or a word, when Slipstream comes back with food they can all eat while they work when they're so deep in focus he didn't even notice him leave, when he falls asleep to the clicking of gears and the scrape of moving dirt and when he wakes in the dim witch-touched hours of the morning certain he knows how to fix his latest project and finds two more pairs of claws joining in to help, Fragment knows without a doubt that he is loved.  |
