"It's dead, Vel. It's dead, but it's alive."

Titanium Wrench Volt Wiring Chrome Laser Head

Krylor was once known to create the strongest prosthetics in Lightning. When those of higher rank noticed his prestige, they put him to work on their newest, most controversial project: assembling a robotic dragon.
Only late into the assignment did they tell him that he was creating the outer shell for a corpse's preserved internals. He was reviving a dead dragon.
But nonetheless, he finished the task.
But the undead-seeming cyborg that resulted from his efforts left a deep discomfort in his gut.
He couldn't bring himself to work for Lightning anymore after that. He ran from the Flight.
Unfortunately, the nightmare followed him.

CASE FILE: CYBORG CREATION, KRYLOR DESERTION
SECURITY CAMERA VISUALS AND AUDIO

Krylor's stomach twisted into a knot inside his throat as he looked down on the sterilized corpse's partially disconnected head. Averting his eyes, he held the last wires for Velraenni as she connected its head to its torso.
"Almost done," Vel murmured. "Just those last three wires." She gestured towards him, palm up. He set the cables into her hand, and she strung them into the base of the cyborg's skull.
Despite its resemblance to a dragon, its body was so armored and mechanical that it barely felt like one anymore. The thought of the lifeless organs within it-- the dead brain and silent heart and everything else-- made his insides twist even tighter. He wanted this project to be over. He never wanted to step foot in this room again.
"We can turn it on," Vel finally said, locking its head into place. "See if it actually works, or if all that surgery was for nothing."
"Yeah," Krylor breathed, but speaking made him feel like vomiting, so he resigned himself to silence for the rest of the day.
"You ready?" she asked, looking him in the eye. She was calm and collected, maybe with a little anticipation-- the opposite of how Krylor felt.
He just nodded, swallowing hard.
"Help me lift it," she ordered coolly, gripping one of its shoulders. Krylor braced himself and grasped the other shoulder, pushing simultaneously with her to lean it into its harness. The harness was hooked up to electrical systems to deliver a high-voltage magical shock that would supposedly start up the dragon's heart and neurons again. Strapping it in, Vel stepped to the other side of the room, and Krylor stayed close beside her.
"Ready?"
Krylor caught her gaze and nodded deliberately again.
"Clear."
As she flicked the switch, the room erupted with the sharp zip, boom, and crackle of revitalizing electricity. Krylor squinted to see past the smoke, and his eyes adjusted in time to see a pair of glowing, electronic eyes open in the steam.
The beast lifted its head through the smoke, focusing on Krylor and Vel. Its glowing, contoured form looked otherworldly and evil when surrounded by smoke. Despite being animated, it was blank, thoughtless, soulless...
"Hi, Terabyte. I'm Vel." Velraenni said tentatively.
The cyborg stared at her. "Hi, Vel," it answered flatly, but it was almost intoned as a question. Its mouth barely moved when it spoke, giving the illusion of a mask.
Setting foot smoothly on the floor, it stepped towards them, motions fluid and perfectly calculated.
"You say I am Terabyte. But who am I? How am I here?" the robot asked.
Velraenni was silent for a moment. Then, carefully, she answered, "We found your body and recreated it with mechanics. Your brain and body are partially that of a dragon."
"Twelve point forty-three percent," the robot commented.
"Yes."
The cyborg's head swiveled towards Krylor, piercing cold eyes staring right through him. "And you? Who are you?"
Krylor's response was a mix between a choke, a croak, and a whisper. "Krylor." He wanted to melt into the wall, sink through the floor, get away from it somehow. This had been a dragon, once. But it had no memory. It wasn't, anymore. It was something else altogether. And that horrified him. What had Lightning made? What had it become? Meshing dragons with robots in this way should never have been allowed.
"Krylor. Vel." Its head tilted between them, analyzing them. Its eyes squinted. "Why am I here?" It stepped ever closer, and a whimper broke from Krylor's throat. This beast could kill them both in a single hit. He'd made it too strong. Why had he made it so powerful?
When Vel didn't respond, it jerked its head towards Krylor. He jumped like a scared cat at the movement, but it just stared at him, animated yet dead. A scream caught in Krylor's throat and suddenly he couldn't breathe. He curled away from it, pressing himself into the wall, unable to rip his eyes away from its undead face.
Forcing the door open, he scurried down the hallway.
"Krylor, wait!" Vel called, rushing out after him. The cyborg followed her calmly, metallic talons clacking on the floor.
He tried to call back a warning to her, but he could barely form a whisper. His feet carried him to the end of the hall, and though the moral part of his mind was nagging that he run back and save Vel, the realistic part of him told him that Vel would save herself if the robot seemed dangerous to her. Krylor tried to shake its haunting image from his mind, eyes glazing over with fear and tears as rushed into the elevator, determined never to set foot in this ungodly place again.
